The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management has chosen Sweco’s geographic IT consultants to cooperate with the Agency in adapting the Swedish fisheries control system to EU regulations. Sweco’s contract is worth nearly EUR 1.1 million.

“The new IT support tools will increase our opportunities to both detect and prevent illegal and unreported fishing activities,” says Johan Löwenadler Davidsson, Departmental Manager at the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management.

The Agency already has extensive information and decision support systems for fisheries control and these will provide a platform for the development initiative. The assignment will include operational requirements analysis and development of both existing and new IT support systems. Together with the Agency, Sweco will among other things create tools to strengthen cross controls and analyse data.

Facts:

In November 2009 the EU decided to introduce a new control system to ensure compliance with the Common Fisheries Policy. A commission implementation regulation was adopted in April 2011. The rules in the regulation go into effect on different dates and some are already applicable. A number of projects must now be carried out in order to meet the requirements placed on the control system.
