Tokmanni starts selling a clothing and accessory collection made from recycled plastic bottles – Information on the supply chain for the Trashcode brand is available online

Finland’s largest general discount retailer Tokmanni has started selling a clothing and accessory collection from the international Trashcode brand. The collection is manufactured using recycled PET plastic bottles. Information on the delivery chain for the new products of the brand, which promotes the circular economy, is readily available on the internet. Tokmanni will also use the new collection consisting of 12 items in the FINIX research project led by Aalto University.

With a clear, timeless design, the Trashcode collection includes two T-shirts, two tunics, two women’s jackets, two chiffon scarves, two canvas bags and two pairs of wide-leg trousers. Repeating a motif of black, white and an animal print, the collection’s products allow you to easily create and combine stylish outfits for formal and casual occasions alike.

The polyester in Trashcode’s GRS-certified products has been largely made from recycled PET plastic bottles. In the new collection, 15 plastic bottles have been used for one women’s jacket, 12 bottles for a pair of trousers and 11 bottles for a tunic, while six plastic bottles are used to manufacture every T-shirt, scarf and bag.

The recycled plastic bottles are initially ground into chips and then made into fibre, thread and cloth. According to Trashcode, the production of recycled polyester with its method consumes 70% less energy and 86% less water, and generates 75% less carbon dioxide, than the production of ordinary polyester.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in the issues related to products and their supply chain. We at Tokmanni aim to respond to our customers’ wishes by making increasingly sustainable choices available to everyone. The new collection by Trashcode, a company that supports the circular economy and is opening an online delivery chain, is an interesting example of this,” says Timo Karanko, Head of Apparel at Tokmanni.

The fabrics in the Trashcode collection’s products have been created by Waste2Wear, which manufactures textiles from plastic bottles and waste polyester fabrics. The products in the collection are manufactured in BSCI-audited factories, with the T-shirts made in India and the other products in China.

To guarantee the best possible fit and to meet the preferences of Finnish customers, the clothes in the new collection have been designed and sized in cooperation with clothing professionals from Tokmanni. The clothes will be available in sizes S–XL, and the accessories are one-size products. The new products will become available at around 180 Tokmanni stores and in the online store in mid-April.

Origin of Trashcode products explained online 

Customers can read on the website of Waste2Wear about the origin and environmental impacts of the Trashcode products sold at Tokmanni. The website can be conveniently accessed through the Tokmanni online store at tokmanni.fi/trashcode or by scanning the QR code printed on the clothing tag of every product with a smartphone or other mobile device.

Waste2Wear uses blockchain technology to provide reliable proof of the Trashcode products’ origin.

“You can read online about the manufacturing process of recycled polyester and testimonies about the environmental effects of the products, for example. We believe that this opportunity to find out about Trashcode’s products will interest our customers and increase openness and traceability,” Karanko says. 





Tokmanni participates in the FINIX project through Trashcode

Using the Trashcode collection, Tokmanni will test and develop a life cycle data management application that is being developed in the FINIX research project led by Aalto University. Tokmanni will supply the application being developed in the project with information on the manufacturing materials and origin of the clothing in the range, the chemicals used in the clothing and working conditions related to the clothing. This will increase the traceability of textile supply chains, which is necessary in order to improve their sustainability. 

The multidisciplinary FINIX research project, which is funded by the Strategic Research Council, aims at systemic change in the textile sector. Systemic change means a change in the operating logic of the entire sector: business models, materials used, the way we buy and recycle clothes. This change will be supported by digitalisation. 

“We consider our cooperation with Aalto University in the FINIX research project to be very interesting and important. Tokmanni is one of the largest sellers of clothing products in Finland, and we have an excellent opportunity to provide significant information for the research project and to participate in developing sustainability in the textile industry,” Karanko says.


The new Trashcode products will be sold at a new product discount (20% off Tokmanni’s normal prices) at selected Tokmanni stores and in the online store, at
tokmanni.fi/trashcode, from Monday to Sunday 19–25 April 2021.
