Veidekke is building the next generation's climate-smart flats

Today, the TellHus climate-smart concept is being inaugurated in Västertorp in Sweden By reducing energy use by 40 per cent, it cuts household carbon emissions in half. The project is a collaborative venture among Veidekke, Electrolux, Fortum, Cramo and Manodo.

"We see a big potential in the TellHus concept as a product for export as well. The next step will be to build it in Norway," says Per-Martin Eriksson, managing director of Veidekke Bostad.

The TellHuset block has a climate shell with well-insulated walls and windows, energy-efficient appliances and low-energy lights in its fixtures. The building is heated by eco-friendly district heating and green electricity during construction. Energy use is based on the principle of using the right energy carrier for the right purpose.

Savings total SEK 4,000 per year for a "TellHus-family" compared with living in a comparable flat in a standard block. The TellHuset block is being built without subsidies, and the construction process is energy-efficient from start to finish.

"With solutions like TellHus, we make it easy for residents to help the environment without compromising on comfort and design. The solution is an integrated concept based on a collaboration with our partners," says Johnny Kellner, head of technology and the environment for Veidekke Bostad.

All products in the building have been chosen to make energy use as efficient as possible, and the flats are equipped with a button to switch off all standby functions. A separate display allows residents to monitor every kilowatt-hour used and the flat's average use. Swedish research shows that just by getting this information, residents reduce their energy use by 15-20 per cent.

On 17 May sales begin of the 35 cooperative flats in the first TellHuset block, which is being built in the Stockholm suburb of Västertorp. The TellHus exhibit is open to the public at Slalomvägen 17, at the junction with Skridskovägen in Västertorp.

- Electrolux washing machines and dishwashers for use with district heating systems cut electricity use by up to 55 per cent.
- Cramo site huts hooked up to district heating save 50,000 - 70,000 kg CO2 on a standard TellHus projekt.
- TellHus district-heating-based bathroom floors reduce CO2 emissions by around 600 kg per year.
- Manodos Sbox individual metering reduces residents' electricity and hot water use by around 15 per cent per household.
- Fortum district heat is generated using 80 per cent renewable fuels and recovered energy. Using district heating in these new applications also makes generation of more electricity possible at the energy-efficient cogeneration plants.
