New Surround Mix Suite at Massey University, Wellington

The Wellington School of Design, as part of the College of Creative Arts at Massey University, has recently opened a state-of-the-art Surround Mix Suite to be used as part of its teaching programme. The suite is located in Te Ara Hihiko, the newly completed College of Creative Arts building.

Working with Scott Simpson of Protel International Technologies the centerpiece of the suite is an Avid Icon D-Control with Surround Panners controlling a Pro Tools HDX2 DSP card system. For surround monitoring duties the Genelec 8250A Smart Active Monitors (DSP) with matching 7271A active subwoofer were chosen.

The project was managed at Massey University by Keir Husson, Technical Demonstrator, who commented:

“The new suite enables us to mix post-production sound more professionally.  The Icon Console the students will learn to use gives them an industry standard previously unavailable. With the Genelec Smart Active Monitors (SAM) monitors we’ve been able to match the monitors to the room automatically using the in-built DSP functionality, which was important.  I have personally been using Genelecs for 15 years and have not heard anything better. The suite will enable the College to expand its sound courses within the design degree. Students from the Bachelor of Design degree have already taken a keen interest in sound and sound design and will use the new suite to enhance their final year projects. The College is now also able to hire out these facilities to its partners in the creative industry.”

The College of Creative Arts has 1800 students enrolled across its programmes. Wellington has a strong film industry with studios such as Park Road Post and Weta Digital being large employers within the region, and with whom the College also has connections.

Protel International Technologies Limited is a leading supplier of Audio and Video solutions to the Film, Broadcast and Post Production industries in New Zealand and has offices in Auckland and Wellington.
