22 tonnes of Cardboard were recycled last year by A World of Furniture’s four furniture stores in the south of England.

The company strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible and recycling packaging materials is an important part of their policy.

“When we deliver furniture to our customers we always unpack the goods in a room of their choice then take away the packaging. Along with waste packaging from furniture in our shops a lot of cardboard is generated - many tonnes” says Mark Hotson, owner of A World of Furniture.

When it comes to recycling, moving waste any distance is a draw on natural resources and should be avoided so A World of Furniture found a great way to recycle cardboard by turning it into horse bedding.

“Our Blandford store is ideally situated because it is adjacent to J&G Environmental - a company that specialises in waste management and recycling. All the cardboard waste we generate is collected by J&G and put to use in a most innovative way,” says Mark.

J&G use custom-built cutting and shredding equipment to process the cardboard and bale it up for sale to stables and equine centres under the trade name JeeGee Bedding. “It's dust-free, more absorbent than traditional animal bedding like straw and wood shavings, and is completely biodegradable. Once finished with, it can be used as an excellent compost which can help reduce the size of muckheaps at stables. It is also cheaper than traditional bedding so is a very good re-use of cardboard,” says John Haines, General Manager at J&G Environmental.

A World of Furniture is proud to be involved with such a project. “This is a prime example of how working with industries around you can make a big difference,” says Mark. “Our customers enjoy a good night sleep with our bedroom furniture so why shouldn’t local horses and livestock enjoy a good night’s sleep too....”
