Adelphi University honored for its commitment to Community Service and Education
For the fourth year in a row, Adelphi University has been named to The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is a national award given in recognition to colleges and universities that have shown excellence in developing and implementing effective community engagement and community service programs at their institutions.
The University received recognition "With Distinction" in the categories of General Community Service and Education . This honor is reserved for “top tier applicant institutions.”
Adelphi was specifically recognized in the area of community service for its volunteerism following Superstorm Sandy. Over 500 students put in 7300 hours embedded in communities most affected by the disaster. On campus students collected over 40,000 items as relief for the storm victims and a winter carnival was held for approximately 350 affected children and families as a day of respite and fun for those that remained displaced.
Another community service project that received recognition was the Cans for Cancer project. For the last several years, Adelphi student athletes and members of the athletic department have helped serve the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop Hospital. They donate an average of $7500 annually to help families with their out of pocket costs incurred while children undergo treatment. In addition the student athletes spend time with the children.
In the education category, Adelphi received honors for their efforts in spreading literacy in low income communities. One such project was America Reads America Counts, wherein students spent 16,000 hours assisting grade-schoolers to improve their reading skills. Also, the university’s Literacy Center gave on-campus scholarships to struggling students whose families were experiencing financial difficulties. A donation of computer equipment from Adelphi University’s IT department to a school whose community was damaged in Superstorm Sandy was also recognized in this designation.
