Cavitation and Dynamic problems - topics during the 6th IAHR meeting

The Hydropower unit of ÅF in Switzerland has participated in the technical conference, the 6th IAHR Meeting of the Working Group "Cavitation and Dynamic problems", organized by the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) in Slovenia in September, 2015. The IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application.

The workshop themes include:

  • Analysis of pumps, turbines and pump-turbines
  • Numerical and experimental investigations of cavitating flows
  • Hydraulic oscillations and flow-induced vibrations
  • Hydraulic transients and control systems
  • Incidents in hydraulic systems and troubleshooting
  • Flow-structure interaction

ÅF presented a paper entitled “Influence of the surge tank water inertia on pumped storage power plant transients in case of pump emergency shutdown” describing the challenging work and valuable experience gained during the Commissioning of Avce Pumped Storage Power Plant (PSPP), in terms of hydraulic transient calculations and validation of the model results with measurements.

These experiences have increased our knowledge in modelling of all type of pump storage power plants and will be an important asset for our future consulting services in pump storage power plants.
