$50,000 grant to help girls in low income communities overcome obstacles to success

The Allianz Foundation for North America has awarded a $50,000 grant to Girls for a Change, a national nonprofit organization which has its east coast headquarters in Richmond, and is focused on training and empowering low income girls aged 11-18. Through its cornerstone Girl Action Team program, Girls for a Change teaches girls and young women in low income communities to find solutions to challenges they face, gaining voice, skills and problem solving in order to realize their full potential.

Girl Action Team participants come together for a minimum of 12 weeks to take on a social change project led by professional women coaches. Together, they identify the root cause of a particular issue in their community and go through the process of solving it. Past projects have included anti-bullying campaigns, pre-natal care education, boosting self-esteem to avoid risky behaviors, avoiding teen pregnancy and promoting school funding among others. The Allianz Foundation grant will support program management, outreach, supplies and other expenses.

"Girls for a Change is doing amazing work in empowering young women to shape their lives positively and to become change makers in their communities,” says Christopher Worthley, Executive Director of the Allianz Foundation for North America. "We are proud and honored to partner with them in this."

“Through our Girl Action Teams, Girls for a Change empowers girls to lead better and healthier lives and make positive changes for themselves and their communities,” said Angela Patton, CEO of Girls for a Change. “We are very pleased to accept this important grant from Allianz. The funds will help us reach more girls with a program that teaches important life skills and has the power to change lives.”
