European Summit to develop Global Standards for Social Media

LONDON – May 16, 2011 – AMEC, the International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication, and the Institute for Public Relations have announced a workshop at their European Summit that aims to be the first step towards building Global Standards in social media measurement.

The workshop, to be held on June 8 as the first day of the European Summit on Measurement, is called “Towards Global Standards in Social Media Measurement”. The IPR and PRSA have now confirmed the results will subsequently be debated at the North American Summit on Measurement to be held on September 18-20, 2011, Philadelphia PA.

Mike Daniels, Chairman of AMEC, said: “Last year's European Summit created industry wide consensus around the Barcelona Principles. We are aiming to create similar momentum around the vital issue of Social Media measurement from the Lisbon Summit. AMEC is hoping that organisations with a real interest in developing robust social media standards will come to Lisbon to contribute actively to this session.”

The workshop will be run by Tim Marklein, Executive VP, Measurement & Strategy, Weber Shandwick; Katie Delahaye Paine, CEO of KDPaine & Partners LLC; and Richard Bagnall, Managing Director of Metrica.

The results of the Social Media session will be considered and discussed during a major Summit debate to establish the main elements of the 2020 Measurement Agenda as a policy step to encourage change.

Paine said: “I'm delighted to be part of the Lisbon Summit. The problem we face is that different organizations have slightly different agendas and definitions of “standard.” As a result, our customers and constituencies are increasingly confused about not just how to do social media measurement right, but what it is that we're even talking about. I see the Lisbon conference as a very important first step in this very important journey and I encourage other organisations to come to Lisbon to be part of this key session.”

Nearly 40 expert international speakers will take part in workshops, plenary sessions and breakout groups. A powerful line-up of speakers includes Facebook, Microsoft, FedEx, Philips, The Independent/Independent on Sunday and i, European Newspaper Publishers Association (ENPA), Council of Europe, BBVA, Oxfam, Organic and Jorge Portugal, advisor on Innovation for the President of the Portuguese Republic.

The European Summit will be held in Lisbon from June 8-10. To book, go to the Summit website .
