South Carolina Physician Gerald E. Harmon, M.D., Elected to American Medical Association Board of Trustees

CHICAGO - June 18, 2013 - The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s largest physician organization, announced today the election of Gerald E. Harmon, M.D., a family medicine specialist from coastal South Carolina, to the Board of Trustees.

“I am honored to serve the nation’s physicians as a member of the AMA Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Harmon. “Working together, physicians can share our expertise to help make significant strides in reducing chronic disease, educating future physicians and improving how care is provided to our patients.”

Dr. Harmon has practiced for more than 25 years in coastal South Carolina. He is currently a clinical professor at two of his state’s medical schools where he has twice been named Community Educator of the Year by the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. He served as chief surgeon and Assistant Surgeon General before retiring from the National Guard and the U.S. Air Force. He served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Dr. Harmon is a former president and chairman of the South Carolina Medical Association. He has been a delegate to the AMA House of Delegates for over 18 years, and is a member of the AMA Council on Medical Service.

Dr. Harmon completed his medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He lives with his wife Linda in Georgetown County.
