Cutting Edge Laser Technology Revealed at Laser 2013

Wausau, WI – Laser 2013, the 33rd Annual Conference hosted by the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS) was held April 3-7, 2013 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel/Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA.

The fundamental purpose of the conference was to provide a forum at which a multidisciplinary array of scientists, clinicians, residents, students, health care professionals, and industry representatives could learn, share, investigate, and create ideas; the outcome of which are clinical applications that can and have changed the world of patient care.

Some of the “Hot Topics” included cutaneous laser surgery, photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy and interstitial laser devices.

Professor Robert S. Langer gave an impressionable keynote address titled, “Biomaterials and Biotechnology: From the Discovery of the First Angiogenesis Inhibitors to the Development of Controlled Drug Delivery Systems and the Foundation of Tissue Engineering”. Dr. Langer is a David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT, has written more than 1,175 articles and is the most cited engineer in history with approximately 800 issued and pending patents worldwide.

The Tech Connect Non-CME Session, held on Thursday, April 4, 2013, directed by Roy Geronemus, M.D. and Christopher Zachary, M.D., showcased 15 experts comprised of physicians and industry members that facilitated a no-holds-barred session where they discussed their personal procedural and device preferences. An Audience Response System (ARS) was used to allow audience participation through direct and immediate feedback as experts discussed what works and how/why devices/techniques are used.

The conference was a temporary home to over 300 abstracts available for viewing. In addition, over 100 companies displayed products and services in the exhibit hall. Representatives of academia, industry and clinical practice were in attendance.  Great conversations, debates and hands on learning continued non-stop throughout the week.

Save the date for Laser 2014, the 34th Annual Conference that will be held April 2-6, 2014 at the Phoenix Convention Center/Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, Phoenix, AZ.

In March of 1979, Dr. Ellet H. Drake began working with Dr. Leon Goldman to establish an American society to encourage physicians and scientists to exchange knowledge, explore new uses for present equipment and generate new medical lasers and accessories.  ASLMS has continued to grow with conference attendance at over 2,000 including over 100 commercial exhibits.
