ROSEMEAD, CA — As today’s specialty optical components market expands into increasingly harsh environments in oil and gas, aerospace and industrial applications, there is a growing need for reliable hermetic terminations that are critical to reliable system performance. Single mode (SM) and multimode (MM) optical fibers with mid-temperature acrylate, polyimide and even gold-coated fibers are now utilized for communications and sensing applications, such as Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) type sensors.
Hermetic Seal Corporation (HSC), a unit of AMETEK Interconnect, has expanded its hermetic sealing capabilities to include state-of-the-art hermetic fiber optic component manufacture. The new glass-to-fiber optic seal (GTFOS) capabilities allow AMETEK HSC to manufacture, process, terminate and test optical connector and feedthrough components for demanding harsh environments utilizing specialty optical fibers.
AMETEK HSC already is the largest independent manufacturer of hermetically sealed connectors, headers and feedthroughs used by the aerospace, defense, telecommunications, oil, gas and petrochemical industries. By commissioning temperature-controlled and monitored hydrostatic pressure vessels and adding manufacturing facilities for fiber preparation, inspection, sealing preparation and optical performance evaluation, AMETEK has further broadened its interconnect industry lead in optical component development, qualification and production.
AMETEK’s new capabilities position it at the forefront in harsh-environment hermetic optical components, providing it with the ability in house to develop, manufacture, process and test products that meet the high-reliability needs of today’s most-advanced optical components.
Utilizing proprietary glass formulations and processes, AMETEK’s unique sealing method results in a hermetic barrier (≤ 10-9scc/sec) with excellent optical properties that maintains stable performance at pressure and temperature that may be in excess of 210oC at 30,000 psi.
