PBS AND NPR NEWSMAKERS TO SAIL ON REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES’ “PTV AT SEA” FALL MEDITERRANEAN VOYAGE

Gwen Ifill, Mark Samels, and Scott Simon on board for 10-day cruise Ports include Venice, Dubrovnik, Malta, Monte Carlo and more

WHAT:  Three top newsmakers from Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR) are headlining PTV at Sea, sailing with Regent Seven Seas Cruises this fall on a 10-day Mediterranean itinerary.  Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of Washington Week, Mark Samels, executive producer of American Experience, and Scott Simon, host of NPR’s Weekend Edition will be presenters and panelists on board Regent’s Seven Seas Mariner for PTV at Sea as it sails from Venice to Croatia, Malta, Tunisia, Monte Carlo, Florence (Livorno), and Rome.

Cruise passengers will have the exclusive opportunity to join presentations and discussions on politics, culture, and lifestyle with these three veteran journalists and producers while sailing to some of the region’s most famous ports.  Additionally, private dinners and receptions will allow for one-on-one conversations with the panelists during the voyage.

GWEN IFILL

  • An accomplished political reporter with experience in both print and broadcast news, Gwen Ifill holds two of the most highly-respected posts in her field. She is Moderator and Managing Editor of Washington Week, the longest-running public affairs program on PBS, and Senior Correspondent for the PBS NewsHour. Ifill is also the best-selling author of The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. She has received more than a dozen honorary doctorates, and is the recipient of several broadcasting excellence awards, including honors from the National Press Foundation, Ebony Magazine, the Radio Television News Directors Association, and American Women in Radio and Television.

MARK SAMELS

  • Mark Samels is executive producer of American Experience, PBS’s flagship history series. Produced by WGBH/Boston, American Experience is television’s most-watched and longest-running history series. Under Samels’ leadership, the series has been honored with nearly every industry award, including the Peabody, Primetime Emmys, the duPont-Columbia Journalism Award, Writers Guild Awards, Oscar nominations, and Sundance Film Festival Audience and Grand Jury Awards. Samels has overseen the production of more than 100 films for the series, focusing on stories from America’s past that are highly resonant in the world today. He has expanded both the breadth of subjects and the filmmaking style embraced by the series, allowing for more contemporary topics and more witness-driven storytelling. In addition to his public television work, Samels is a founding member of the International Documentary Association and has served on the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Nonfiction Peer Group.

SCOTT SIMON

  • Scott Simon has won every major award in broadcasting, but the one that means the most to him is Chicago’s Studs Terkel Award. He hosts NPR’s Weekend Edition with Scott Simon, which is heard by more than 4 million people every week, the series Backstage With on PBS stations, and appears on BBC-TV. He is the author of several books, including Home and Away, a sports memoir, Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Baseball, the novel Pretty Birds about two teenage girls during the siege of Sarajevo, the political comedy Windy City, and his most recent book, Baby, We Were Meant for Each Other: In Praise of Adoption. He has covered ten wars, done stories in all states and every continent, gone swimming with Esther Williams, flown as Peter Pan and aboard the US space shuttle simulator, and danced the role of Mother Ginger in The Nutcracker.
