AU-System commits to Open Mobile Architecture initiative (OMA) - Support for the initiative marks AU-System's dedication to open standards and globally interoperable mobile services 3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France - 18 February 2002 - AU-System, part of the Teleca group, today announced support for the Open Mobile Architecture (OMA) initiative. The initiative is dedicated to ensuring a global and open mobile software and services market. The Open Mobile Architecture initiative is bringing the leading companies in the mobile industry together to boost the early introduction of new, interoperable mobile services worldwide, utilising the GSM/GPRS evolution and coming 3G mobile telecommunications networks. To realise industry-wide growth and to ensure economies of scale, OMA focuses on open and global standards that are implemented on uniform service platforms. This will lead to branded, personalised and interoperable mobile services and solutions to be available from many operators over a broad array of terminals. The participants in the Open Mobile Architecture initiative have committed to developing products and services based on open mobile architecture enablers such as WAP2.0/XHTML, MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) and Javatm technology. The members will work closely with standards bodies such as the 3GPP, the WAP Forum and Java Community Process (JCP). The participants will also identify new technologies that are needed to achieve openness and interoperability and map them to the appropriate standards and/or interoperability testing (IOT) body. "AU-System is delighted to endorse an open mobile architecture which has already shown a significant momentum through broad industry support. AU- System is committed to drive open standards, including MMS, which will enable interoperable, mass-market services. Compliant solutions from different vendors will accelerate the introduction and adoption of feature-rich mobile offerings," said Christer Björk, Business Area Manager at AU-System. "The initiative has gained an important supporter in AU-System," said Leif Soderberg, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Strategy and Business Development for Motorola's Personal Communications Sector. "The software sector drives OMA's mission, and, for that reason, AU- System is a significant addition to this growing group." "Nokia is pleased to welcome the support from AU-System for an open mobile architecture. They are a leading supplier of mobile services solutions, and this move is again another example of the increasing consensus among industry players that open standards are the only way forward towards a global, non-fragmented services market," said Pertti Korhonen, Senior Vice President, Mobile Software, Nokia. In November 2001, the following companies committed to the open mobile architecture: AT&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless, MM02, NTT DoCoMo, Telefonica Moviles, Vodafone, Fujitsu, Matsushita, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Symbian. Other companies that have expressed their commitment to the Open Mobile Architecture initiative include: BEA Systems, Inc., Borland Software Corporation, China Mobile, Hewlett-Packard Company, IBM, Oracle, ST Microelectronics, Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Texas Instruments.
