·     Shop will spend winnings on ‘free pie and vinyl’ for loyal customers

Pie & Vinyl in Southsea has been named the UK’s best independent record shop in a national award run by audio giant Audio-Technica, in celebration of Record Store Day (20th April 2013), where hundreds of the UK’s independently owned record stores come together to celebrate the art of music.

Over the past month, the UK’s music lovers have been nominating their favourite record stores via Audio-Technica’s Facebook  page.

Thousands of votes were cast, with Pie & Vinyl in Southsea beating fellow finalists The Music Exchange in Nottingham, Love Music in Glasgow, Soundclash in Norwich and Vinyl Tap in Huddersfield.
Pie & Vinyl now wins £1,000 to put towards a special event for its loyal customers. It has pledged to spend the prize money on holding a first birthday party and giving its loyal customers gifts. As well as giving away free pie and records to reward their customers.

Store owner, Steve Roger Courtnell, said: ''We are absolutely delighted to win this award in our first year of trading and we are very grateful to Audio-Technica for organising the awards. We feel so humbled that people enjoy our quirky little shop with big ideas and feel privileged to help put Southsea on the map! Together we have proved that records are alive and well, and we have the ultimate chance to thank you all with our first birthday party!”

Audio-Technica senior UK marketing manager Harvey Roberts said: “The UK is seriously into music, and the heart of the industry is the independent record stores, run by fanatics, and catering to the fans. As a leading audio technology brand, we share that love and obsession of music.”
“This competition was not only about celebrating Record Store Day and our independents, but about giving something back to the shops, and the fans – more important than ever when the High Street is experiencing such tough times. Pie & Vinyl is a very deserving winner, which caught the public’s imagination with its plans for a first birthday party! This competition has been a huge success and we are hoping it will become an annual event as we want to continue to give back to the music community.”

Audio-Technica is not commercially affiliated with Record Store Day 2013.
