If you overindulged this Easter, now is the perfect time to burn off those egg-stra calories by training for a marathon or half marathon distance at Scotland’s very first Pedal it Pink in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh on Sunday 16 May 2010. By getting on your bike for just one hour to train for Pedal it Pink, you can burn off approximately 530 calories which is the equivalent of: • One chocolate Easter egg • Two hot cross buns (one bun is 250 calories) • One slice of simnel cake Catriona Wright, Events Manager at Breast Cancer Campaign, said: “Now that spring has sprung we hope lots of ladies will get on their bikes and join us for Pedal it Pink in Edinburgh. And what better time to sign up now and start training after the long weekend when many people would like to burn off Easter treats? Not only will you be getting fit but taking part in our cycling challenge means you will be helping us to fund innovative breast cancer research to support the 4,000 people who will sadly be diagnosed in Scotland this year.” Pedal it Pink, sponsored by Santander, has a variety of routes to choose from to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. So far 1,800 women across the UK have pedalled it pink to raise more than £140,000 for breast cancer research at three events in Liverpool, Nottingham and Essex. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 530 calories an hour.
