LEEDS MOTHER AND SON RAISE £1,000 FOR HEART CHARITY WITH SPONSORED WALK
27 May, 2011 18:53 CET
Despite driving rain and strong winds, 44 year-old Theresa Rowland and son Tom, 15, from Bramley, Leeds set off on a 29 mile sponsored walk along the Leeds to Skipton canal on Sunday 22 May. The twosome successfully raised over £2,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
Theresa signed up for the walk after raising money for the British Heart Foundation at work. Theresa is a member of the Purchasing Support Team at Bupa Care Services in Horsforth Leeds. The foundation is one of Bupa Care Service’s elected charities for 2011 and all money raised by Teresa and Tom’s walk is being match funded by Bupa Care Services.
Tom volunteered to join his mum on the walk and raised over £100 from sponsorship at his school, Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School in Leeds. Tom has had health problems himself and successfully beat non-hodgkin lymphona cancer when he was 11 years old.
Theresa said; “Although it was quite hard going, Tom and I were determined to walk as far as possible for such a worthy cause. We were disappointed we only managed 18 miles, but we’re going back to finish it when our blisters have healed up!”
Siobhan Drane, Bupa’s Bupa Care Services Community Affairs Consultant, said: “I’m very proud that our staff are walking to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. Theresa and Tom have been so enthusiastic and the money raised is supporting such a worthy cause, close to the hearts of many staff members and residents within our homes. Good luck to all those taking part!”
