CalPortland Mojave Plant Recognized by Southern California Edison for Energy Savings

MOJAVE CA - On June 5th, Southern California Edison (SCE) Senior Account Manager Bob Kniss  presented a rebate check in the amount of $524,367.09 to Ronald DuMond, Mojave Cement Plant Manager and Bruce Shafer, Senior Vice President of Cement Operations. This rebate represents only a portion of the total energy savings incentive for a major energy management project at the Mojave Cement Plant. SCE collaborates with their customers to provide financial incentives for projects that provide true energy efficiency.  This large rebate is approximately 60% of the total expected rebate from SCE based on completion of the Gas Conditioning Tower (GCT) project at the plant.

Gas Conditioning Towers are used to reduce kiln gas exit temperatures by the injection of water into the top of the tower.  Previously, the Mojave Plant had been using an air to air heat exchanger which consisted of two large fans blowing ambient air across many tubes through which process gasses were passed.  This upgrade has numerous energy efficiency advantages over the old system including reduced power requirement by the kiln fan, lower gas exit temperatures, lower pressure drop, and the elimination of two large energy-intensive fans. It is estimated that this project will provide over $600K in annual energy savings. The opportunity for the rebate was a critical factor during the consideration of the project and provided the necessary incentive to justify construction.

“The successful completion of CalPortland's energy efficiency project at our Mojave Cement Plant, and the collaborative support of SCE's energy rebate program, embodies our goals to reduce energy consumption, improve our operating facilities, and engage with our communities, all which deliver greater value to our customers”, stated Bruce Shafer, Senior Vice President of Cement Operations.  Stephen Coppinger, Director of Engineering added, “Projects like the new Gas Conditioning Tower show CalPortland’s determination to be as energy efficient and as environmentally responsible as we can possibly be.  Southern California Edison and its 3rd party provider, Onsite Energy, were instrumental in facilitating this incentive.”

Projects such as the Gas Conditioning Tower are another example of why CalPortland has been awarded the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for Sustained Excellence for the past nine years.
