Stockholm County Council’s has today decided to renew Capio’s contract to run St Göran’s Hospital in central Stockholm, Sweden. The new contract covers the period 2013-2021 with a right for the council to extend the contract for another four years. The annual contract value is approximately 1 300 million SEK (145 million euros). Capio has successfully been running the hospital care at St Göran’s Hospital on behalf of the council since the autumn of 1999.

“We will do our best to fulfil the expectations that patients, staff and the council have on the healthcare in Stockholm and we hope that our quality work has played an important part in the decision”, says Thomas Berglund, CEO of Capio.

Healthcare at Capio St Göran’s will continuously be carried out within the main medical specialties internal medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, anesthesia and intensive care, neurology and emergency care. The emergency unit, which currently receives about 70,000 visits annually, will be expanded to accommodate up to 100,000 visits. Currently there are around 310 beds at the hospital and the number will gradually increase.

Capio St Göran's Hospital is already today strongly focused on patients seeking emergency care. Currently, emergency care represents two-thirds of the activities. Through a gradual relocation of planned, elective care, the hospital will be even further focused on acute care expected to equal three-quarters of emergency activities. Elective care will be relocated to specialist centres and local hospitals. At the same time, it is anticipated that certain emergency care will be moved into Capio St Göran’s Hospital in connection with the opening of the New Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, which will have a different focus than today. The shift is part of the council’s efforts to carry out healthcare at the level which gives best medical quality and best operational productivity.

Capio St Göran's Hospital already ranks among the best in Stockholm County Council in terms of healthcare quality, accessibility, patient safety and productivity. In its tender, Capio has specified a number of objectives which will further improve these achievements.
