Sainsbury’s Home Delivery Fleet has Even More Space to Fill Thanks to Slimline Refrigeration Technology from Carrier Transicold
WARRINGTON, United Kingdom, July 9, 2013
One of the largest chains of supermarkets in the UK, Sainsbury’s, is adding 230 new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters to its home delivery fleet, each mounted with a mix of RVL, Lawrence David and Solomon Commercials bodywork, featuring Carrier Transicold’s innovative NEOS 100S split system refrigeration units. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
The NEOS 100S systems enable Sainsbury’s to maximise load capacity thanks to its roof-mounted design, requiring only a slimline evaporator to be fitted inside the body.
The delivery marks significant repeat business for Carrier Transicold, and follows the proven reliability of an initial 230 NEOS 100S systems delivered to Sainsbury’s during 2011. The NEOS 100S is a conventional split system, alternator-driven unit for commercial vehicles with a load space of up to six cubic metres. It is mounted externally on the vehicle’s roof to create additional internal space, and has a slimline evaporator that can be installed into even the smallest of cargo compartments.
Unlike direct-drive systems, the NEOS 100S uses power from the vehicle’s alternator to maintain cooling or heating capacity regardless of engine speed. This guarantees temperature integrity and ensures faster pull-down whilst reducing engine load, resulting in improved fuel consumption.
Phil Cane, delivery operations manager, Sainsbury’s Online, said, “The advantages of the Carrier system are clear; we have a more reliable, lower maintenance fridge, which meets our operational requirements whilst carrying a lower volume of refrigerant.”
The NEOS 100S unit operates with less refrigerant and with a reduced risk of leaks, further enhancing product reliability. Sainsbury’s expects to keep them on the fleet for the next four years.
“The NEOS 100S unit is simple to maintain, easy to service and shows improved reliability versus older, engine-mounted and compressor-driven units that we have had on the fleet in the past.
“Our repeat business with Carrier Transicold is based on a strong, all-round package, comprising good customer service, reliable equipment and solid performance,” added Cane.
