Varma headquarters topped with 215 solar panels – generated solar power now equals eight single-family houses

A total of 215 solar panels were installed on two roofs of Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company headquarters in September. The solar power system continues Caverion's cooperation with Varma in renewable energy. Last year Caverion delivered solar power systems to two other properties of Varma.

“Solar power makes financial sense for us and it is also an ecological investment. The solar power plant at Varma headquarters consists of a smart power system by SolarEdge where the energy generation is better than with traditional systems. Smart solar power systems allow optimising the energy generation: each panel forms its own generation unit. For example, if some of the panels get shaded, the others still produce maximum power. Monitoring the output of each panel is easy and maintaining the system is efficient,” says Toni Pekonen, Director, Business Premises at Varma.

The annual electricity generation of the panels installed at the headquarters located in the Salmisaari district equals approximately the annual power consumption of three single-family houses heated with electricity. The energy generation is at its best level in April-August when the weather is bright but cool.

“As solar power systems evolve, solar power has become an economic source of renewable energy. We look for the best solutions for each site together with the customers. We want to help our customers achieve their goals in reducing their carbon footprint,” says Heikki Rostila, Vice President, Division Finland at Caverion.

Generated solar power now equals eight single-family houses

The solar power system built on the roof of Varma headquarters is part of Varma's goal of reducing the carbon footprint of their properties with 15% by 2020.

Two of Varma's properties in Helsinki already have solar power systems designed and implemented by Caverion. In 2016, a system containing 197 solar panels was installed on the roof of the office building in Lauttasaari and a system of 128 solar panels on the roof the office building in Ruoholahti. The combined annual electricity output of the solar power systems at the headquarters and of the ones installed earlier equals approximately the annual power consumption of eight single-family houses heated with electricity.

Caverion is also delivering Varma a smart SolarEdge solar power system to the Rajalla shopping centre located in Tornio.
