37 Physician-Owned Facilities Appear on Prestigious Top 50 List

Washington, DC (Feb 14, 2012)— Almost 75 percent of the top 50 hospitals rated most highly by patients are physician-owned hospitals (POHs). Becker’s Orthopedic Review released the list of the “Top 50 Hospitals with Best Patient Rating” last week.

These ranking are based on the government’s Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) data which surveys patient experience and satisfaction. To be included on the Top 50 list, hospitals had the highest percentage of patients who rated their experience as a 9 or 10 on a 0 (worst) to 10 (best) scale. Of the 50 hospitals listed, 37 are physician-owned hospitals.

“We work hard every day to give our patients the best care possible. The physician-owned hospital model is centered around that goal,” said Brett Gosney, chief executive officer of Animas Surgical Hospital in Durango, Colo. “It’s not surprising that the majority of top-rated hospitals are physician owned.”

In total, there are 265 POHs in 33 states. These facilities consistently rank high in both patient satisfaction and quality measures according HCAHPS, HealthGrades, Press Ganey and other benchmarking services.

Despite these consistently high ratings, Congress chose to outlaw the construction of new POHs as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

“Physician-owned hospitals continue to be rated among the highest in the nation for patient satisfaction and quality. We give patients a choice and access to high-quality care,” says Dr. Michael Russell, president of Physicians Hospitals of America. “Unfortunately, the government has limited access to our hospitals and we are currently fighting for the right to expand our model of patient care.

In December, 2011 the House of Representatives, in a bi-partisan effort, provided relief from Section 6001 of the Patient Protection and Affordability Act which limits expansion of POHs as part of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act. The Senate’s version of the bill did not contain Section 6001 relief.  The final outcome will be dependent on decisions by a Conference Committee to H.R. 3630 this month.
