Yummy Fashion Photography for Teens at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library invites teens to experience fashion photography as a career possibility and compete for a chance at a week-long apprenticeship in the industry.

What do you get when you combine delicious food, fashion photography and teenagers? At Charlotte Mecklenburg Library you get the theme for this year’s Teen Fashion Apprentice program series and contest. This annual summer event introduces teens to careers in the fashion industry through a series of workshops, culminating in a coveted apprenticeship with a partnering agency in the fashion world. This year the focus will be on fashion photography, and the apprenticeship will be with Studio 345, one of the partners with the Library in this year’s effort.

"Our intent is to create an enjoyable, insightful, and inspiring experience for teens,” said Teen Library Services Specialist Marie Harris. “This is a time in a young person’s life in which they might be contemplating what they could do for a career. This program series takes them step-by-step through the process of choosing a creative pursuit, taking workshops to learn how to do it well, and turning that skill into a career possibility. The experience is fun and there are real opportunities for participants to get hands-on and learn. Our goal is simple: to have teens say 'Wow, I enjoyed that! I feel better prepared to start thinking about my future.' "

This is the third year the Library has conducted the Fashion Apprentice contest, and this year the theme for the contest is “Yummy Fashion”.

To participate, interested teens must complete a contest packet (available online at www.cmlibrary.org/teens), submit an image according to the contest rules (photo entries must be related in some way to fashion and should reflect the theme “yummy” as pertaining to food), and attend one of the contest days listed here.

Teen Fashion Apprentice Contest Days:

  • South County Regional Library: July 21, 2014

  • North County Regional Library: July 22, 2014

  • ImaginOn Library: July 23, 2014

  • West Boulevard Library: July 24, 2014

  • Beatties Ford Road Regional Library: July 28, 2014

  • University City Regional Library: July 31, 2014

If a teen would like more hands-on experience prior to the contest days, introductory workshops taught by professional photographer Todd Youngblood are being held at six library branches in July. In these free workshops, teens will gain hands-on experience and learn different camera techniques. The workshops are open to any teen, regardless of whether they are participating in the Fashion Apprentice contest.

Photography 101 Workshops

Winning teens from each Contest Day will be eligible to participate in a one-week fashion photography internship with Studio 345. The apprenticeship will take place during the first week in August and offers the winning teens real-world experience in the fashion photography industry. The series will culminate to the Teen Fashion Apprentice show at ImaginOn on August 30 in which the winning teens will showcase photos they have taken while in the apprenticeship.
