Christian Men’s Network Young People’s Mentoring Goes Global

April 3, 2013. DALLAS, TX  Good parenting is the bridge that leads children to maturity. With 30 percent of America’s young people now growing up in homes without fathers, mentoring has become the critical pathway to maturity for millions of at-risk children.

“Mentoring boys into being responsible young men is the proven method to build strong fathers, and healthy families,” said Paul Louis Cole, President of the Dallas-based Christian Men’s Network.  CMN is a global men’s mentoring movement established in 1977 that has trained over one million men in more than one hundred nations.

Internationally, more than 350,000 men each month participate in the CMN curriculum. Using CMN men’s books, mentors train thousands of young men in after-school programs and weekend camps called “Men of Honor.” Nations such as Belize, with one of the world’s highest murder rates, are adopting the program.

Studies demonstrate that mentoring increases academic performance, school attendance and character development while reducing use of drugs, violence and teen pregnancy.  The CMN “Men of Honor,” program experiences as high as an 80 percent decrease in rates of discipline incidents when implemented with children in low-performing schools.

“When you recognize that Germany had 19% fatherlessness leading up to Hitler’s takeover of the ‘Fatherland,’ and today in America we are at 30%, it would be disastrous not to act,” Cole said.

On April 18-20, at the Lions Roar 2013 Global Men’s Summit, leaders from a dozen nations are gathering to strategize and synergize “majoring in men.” One speaker will be Bishop Harry Jackson of the International Communion of Evangelical Churches. Jackson appeared on the CBS Face the Nation program on Sunday, March 31, 2013.

“The idea that God created [young people] with a unique purpose really challenges them,” Jackson said. “The next generation wants to be God’s answer to problems of the world. They just don’t have a clear understanding of how that comes together.”

Statistics for America’s young men reflect the global problem. Boys without fathers in the home have double the odds of being incarcerated, experience 63 percent of the suicides, 85 percent of the behavioral disorders and are 71 percent of high school drop outs.

“We are engaged in rescuing men,” Cole said, “and that includes young men. New construction is always easier than reconstruction. We have men ministering to men in cell blocks, but we’d rather avoid that by ministering to youngsters on blacktops.”

Lion's Roar 2013 runs noon Thursday, April 18 to noon Saturday April 20.  Evening 7-9 pm sessions are free and women are invited. Day sessions are for registered delegates only. Lion’s Roar will be at Gateway Grand Prairie, 2404 N. Carrier Parkway, Grand Prairie, Texas.
