Tabasco Governor Arturo Nunez Jimenez is the keynote speaker at Youth for Human Rights Forum.

Tabasco Governor Arturo Nunez Jimenez was keynote speaker at Youth for Human Rights Forum October 14, 2013.

In his speech at the Youth for Human Rights Forum in Villhermosa, Tabasco, in October, Tabasco Governor Arturo Nunez Jimenez stressed the importance of human rights education.

Several months earlier, Jimenez signed into law a human rights reform initiative that was approved by the state congress and its 17 municipalities. But at the Youth for Human Rights forum, the governor stressed it is not enough for these words to be on paper in an official document.

His thoughts were echoed by Federal Deputy (MP) Nelly Vargas Perez, who organized the forum. “Today, we have a Constitution for the State of Tabasco that is modern, up-to-date and cutting edge on the subject of human rights, but we have to translate it into reality," she said.

In launching the forum, Governor Jimenez announced his intention to incorporate human rights education into the curriculum at secondary and university level throughout his state.

Youth for Human Rights International President Mary Shuttleworth and Youth for Human Rights Mexico Executive Director Raúl Arias presented Jimenez with a certificate of appreciation for “leadership in human rights education in Tabasco.”

Shuttleworth and Arias are both recipients of the International Association of Scientologist Freedom Medals for their outstanding work in the field of human rights.
