Training company celebrates a decade of excellence
Training by Design Ltd, a management development and business coaching company based in Alderley Edge in Cheshire, celebrates ten years in business this May. Despite a challenging economy, Ann Burton, founder and managing director of the business, estimates that she has trained almost 1,200 people since she established the business in 2003.
Training by Design is one of 220 Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) approved training centres in the North West alone so the company is operating within a highly competitive sector.
A graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University, Ann puts her success to-date down to a tailored approach to meet the needs and objectives of each individual.
“For me, training is very personal business,” said Ann. “I love to see people touched by training and watch their attitudes change and see them grow in confidence. People I have trained have described it as having changed their lives, and that is an incredibly rewarding thing to hear.”
Ann’s company offers leadership and management qualifications, as well as coaching and mentoring, via the ILM programme, covering such topics as stress management, leadership, change management, managing conflict and communications.
Earlier this year, Ann was appointed an external verifier for ILM.
“It was a real high point for me to be recognised in this way,” she said.
Although most of her work is related to the workplace, the training she provides equips people for life, helping them through difficult situations in and out of the working environment.
Ann said: “I don’t believe that training should be staid or boring, or, indeed, that it should be ‘off the shelf’. All of my training programmes are ‘brain friendly’ and interactive, and we include what I call ‘real play’ rather than ‘role play’ sessions so that lessons are based on real life experiences.”
Training by Design is an example of small, local business that has carved a successful niche for itself within a specialist area. Working mostly with corporate clients, Ann now has plans to launch open courses so that anyone can avail of her training programmes.
She said: ”It has been an exciting and busy ten years and I can honestly say that I have loved every minute of it. My immediate goal is to continue servicing my existing client-base, to offer open ILM management training and to offer coaching and mentoring programmes as well. ”
