Dennis Leary – Farm to City Restaurateur
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – January 2015 – Dennis Leary, a restaurateur who opened three establishments in the past year (Terminus, and Natoma Cabana, and Trocadero Club- now RX), splits his time between managing his empire in San Francisco and starting a farm in Capay Valley.
The most recent addition to his restaurant empire is the reopening of Trocadero Club as RX, a craft cocktail bar in the Tenderloin. The name comes from the prohibition era, when a doctor’s prescription was one’s only way to legally access liquor. His restaurants and bars are full of similar references to history and art; including when he commissioned local graffiti artist, Ian Ross, to design the front of Natoma Cabana.
Notoriously against phones and technology taking over our lives – he designs his restaurants to maximize face-to-face interaction - it’s no surprise Leary enjoys his farm life. An hour and a half outside of San Francisco, he lives a very different lifestyle. Instead of jumping between his spaces, he works outside on the field.
Leary already roasts his own coffee for his restaurants and plans to start growing crops on his land in the coming years. “It’s interesting shifting from fast-paced city life to farm life, where you plan out crops over five to ten years. You can’t make anything happen in five minutes like you can in the city,” He says.
Despite this time shift, appreciates mixing city life and farm life. He enjoys the juxtaposition of a black tie event at night and working in the dirt and mud the next morning.
