“It’s some scoop to have a Grammy nominated band like The Tiger Lillies in the performance. Together we make music and visual theatre melt into one,” says Martin Tulinius, who have won several Danish Theatre Awards for his performances – among others the visual concept of “The mermaid” (2006), a performance that toured internationally and did very well – in Soutbank Centre, London and Wiener Festwoche for example.
In Republique’s new HAMLET the text is cut down to the essential story: A man that defines himself in relation to his family. His world crumbles when he starts thinking that his uncle has killed his father and married his mother. The musical theatre performance gives you alluring and poetic pictures, physical theatre, giant puppets and imaginative video projections. And not least the fascinating British world band The Tiger Lillies who unfolds the story about Hamlet with their gypsy-cabaret sound. Is Hamlet playing mad or is he really going mad?
Composer and lead singer in the band, Martyn Jaques, has composed the music for the performance and reinterprets Shakespeare in his lyrics. The Tiger Lillies are on stage when THE TIGER LILLIES perform HAMLET is performed at Republique and on the international tour to London, Gothenburg, Lyon, Helsinki etc.
The Danish and Swedish critics find that Republique succeeds. Among others, the daily financial newspaper, Børsen and the English newspaper Copenhagen Post gives the performance 5 stars closely followed by 4 stars in Politiken and Jyllands-Posten:
…a sinful ’HAMLET’ that is innovative, imaginative and incredible. (…) It’s an evening that will haunt you for all the right reasons.
5 stars Copenhagen Post (Denmark)
It’s in the love story as such that the performance really grows. Morten Burian and the only 15 years old Nanna Finding Koppel float around like Chagall’s lovers – she balancing on her white bed and finally even walking on water – vertically up the swaying wall. It’s pure magic when Tulinius’ skills as a director and stage designer merge.
4 stars Politiken (Denmark)
Martin Tulinius, the five actors and musicians succeed in making this performance a fulfilled experience that makes Shakespeare burst of vitality. This performance (…) will leave traces in the history of Hamlet.
Svenska Dagbladet (Sweden)
Morten Burian succeeds as one of the most interesting Hamlet characters we've seen - a thoughtful walk towards death.
