Nordic Organic Food Fair & Natural Products Scandinavia 2013: Exhibitor show highlights

Natural and organic food buyers, health store retailers, restaurant owners and foodservice managers will find hundreds of delicious new products for their stores and kitchens at next month’s new Nordic Organic Food Fair.  Taking place in Malmö, Sweden, on 20-21 October, the event is co-located with the award-winning Natural Products Scandinavia trade show.

Together, the two events will feature 300 exhibiting companies offering an unrivalled choice of natural, organic, biodynamic, Fairtrade, eco-friendly, free-from, special diet, and health food products from around the world.  The following is just a selection of some of the new food and drink products being launched onto the Nordic market this year.

Nordic Organic Food Fair

Nathalie's Direct Trade AB (stand FD14) buys fruits directly from farmers in Colombia and sell these delicacies directly to shops in Sweden.  Through direct trade, they minimise middle parties, which means better pay for the farmers and support to help them go organic.  At this year’s show, they will be sampling a new range of dried fruits, which are exceptional in taste and softness thanks to the quality of the fruits and the gentle drying process.  (Sweden)

Organic certifier for Sweden and Norway (EU Certification) – standards provider KRAV (stand FB02A) will be hosting a pavilion at this year’s launch event.  KRAV Pavilion participants include Jesses Deli AB; Matric Italgross AB; and Solmarka Gårdsbageri AB.  98% of consumers are aware of the KRAV branding and what it means, and currently 20% of the national market is KRAV certified.  (Sweden)

Gourmet coffee company, Marley Coffee UK (stand FC03L in the Soil Association Pavilion), founded by Bob Marley’s son, Rohan, will be creating a stir at this year’s show.  Its premium organic range includes Marley Coffee One Love Organic Coffee Blend (Medium Roast); Marley Coffee Buffalo Soldier Organic Coffee Blend (Dark Roast); and Lively Up! Organic Coffee Blend (Espresso Roast).  Marley Coffee adopts the ITAL standard, ‘Rastafari’ for all things Pure, True and Vital – putting the free spirit back into the coffee drinking experience.  (UK)

The Ginger Party will be presenting its new Organic Ginger Soother Tonic on stand FC03B in the Soil Association Pavilion.  The Ginger Party Organic Ginger Soother drink is a convenient ready-to-drink tonic that provides consumers with their daily dose of ginger.  Made with piquant Peruvian ginger, zippy lemon juice and sweetened only with pure golden honey, Ginger Soother is a refreshing elixir that can be enjoyed hot or cold.  (UK)

Soil Association Certification (stand FC03A) is the wholly owned subsidiary of the Soil Association, the leading organisation in the UK campaigning for better food and farming.  With over 70% of all organic products sold in the UK carrying the Soil Association symbol, they are the UK’s largest organic certification body.  (UK)

Maia Organic (stand FC24) is a partnership between an exclusive selection of Italian farmers, that produce cereals, seeds and legumes in compliance with organic regulation and sustainable agricultural practices, and BMS; a private-label packaging company.  Each product is presented in 100% biodegradable packaging, derived from renewable sources.  To enhance the transparency of the supply chain, each package details where the product has been cultivated, and their website provides further information about the individual farms and its products.  (Italy)

Con Marche Bio will be exhibiting its Terra Bio Soc. Coop products on stand FB16.  Certified Naturland Fair, Terra Bio Soc. Coop have added semi-wholegrain spelt spaghetti to its range of organic and fair trade pasta.  Terra Bio Soc. Coop products are now available on the Danish and Swedish markets.  (Italy)

For more than 30 years Bohlsener Mühle (stand FA05) has been using organic grains, processed in its own mill, to produce bakery products.  With their competence in baking and comprehensive know-how, their range today includes many different grain products.  For 2013, they’ll be presenting crunchy cookies and spicy crisp bread, available in four different flavours (including Snäckebrot Curry Pumpkinseed, which is featured in the New Products Showcase at the event).  (Germany)

In addition to its range of delicious organic oils, Huilerie Moog will be introducing the vitality organic Flaxseed oil series – Omega Color by Bio Planète (stand FC02).  Available in classic, gourmet and vitality, these innovative compositions provide the health-conscious customer with the perfect oil for every situation of life.  They are made using a unique, natural 3D-filtration processing technique that eliminates all of the oils’ bitter constituents.  (Germany)

The Biodynamic Demeter Pavilion (stands FD04A-J) will showcase a wide range of delicious Demeter products: from olives to baby food, juices, whole meals and fruits.  Plus, there will also be information about biodynamic agriculture and the Demeter association.  Pavilion participants include Holle; Tilouche Fruchtimport; ErdmannHAUSER; Voelkel; ROSE Biomanufaktur; Bio-Obst Augustin KG; and EPIKOUROS Organic Products Ltd.

ErdmannHAUSER (stand FD04D in the Biodynamic Demeter Pavilion) manufactures several sorts of biodynamically grown grain (including spelt, barley, buckwheat, oat, one-grained-wheat and wheat).  They are also famous for their salty snacks (Grissini, Saltsticks and Pretzels), fine biscuits and rusk (crisp bread) – mostly made from spelt.  (Germany)

EPIKOUROS Organic Products Ltd (stand FD04J in the Biodynamic Demeter Pavilion) is a 100% organic, Demeter-certified company, managed by the agronomists Michalis, Labis and Nikolaos.  Established in 199, today Epikouros is the No.1 Greek exporter of organic and biodynamic olive products.  The range includes extra virgin olive oils; Kalamata olives; green olives; stuffed olives; olive pastes and tapenades; sun-dried tomatoes; pepperonis; and artichoke hearts.  Plus, also the first certified biodynamic wines from Greece.  (Greece)

Demeter e.V. is the brand for products from Biodynamic Agriculture (stand FD04A).  Only strictly controlled and contractually bound partners are permitted to use the Brand.  Demeter farmers and processors actively contribute toward the shaping of a future worth living for, creating healthy foods of distinctive tastes, truly ‘Foods with Character’.  (Germany)

DO-IT Dutch Organic International Trade (stand FC12) is an importer and exporter of 100% organic food ingredients.  At this year’s show, they will be launching a range of 100% gluten-free flours (including amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, and millet).  Other new products on show include Amaizin Coconut Cream (pure concentrated coconut cream from Sri Lanka); la BIO IDEA egg pasta, tagliatelle and pappardelle; la BIO IDEA tortellini from the Emilia Romana region (available in Cheese, Tomato-mozzarella and Ricotta-spinach); and Italian rice from la BIO IDEA.  (The Netherlands)

BioBandits (stand FD28) is a Dutch producer of organic mustard, sauces, dressing and mayonnaise.  The BioBandits range includes 12 modern organic products, each with their own distinctive taste and usage.  New additions for 2013: three types of Mustard, which are all free of sugar and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.  All BioBandits products are gluten free.  (The Netherlands)

Clearspring Ltd (stand FA16) is back in Malmö for a second year with authentic Japanese and organic fine foods.  The focus this year will be on its delicious new organic ceremonial Matcha green tea powder: vivid green in colour and smooth and rich in flavour.  They will also be highlighting their gluten free, wheat free and dairy free ranges, which have grown in popularity over the past 12 months.  Products include the best gluten free organic brown rice crackers, with black sesame, visitors will ever taste!  (UK)

The COCOA brand (stand FD20) was created to discover and offer chocolate lovers its primeval taste, extracted from raw cocoa bean.  Products are made from a rare type of cocoa beans, which are imported from around the world.  As sweetener, ‘coconut blossom sugar’ is used exclusively.  New products include Raw Chocolate with Goji Berries (made with unroasted Criollo cocoa beans); and Raw Chocolate covered Mulberries.  (Poland)

Winterhaven Ranch and sister company Oasis Date Gardens (stand FA09) have been growing, packing and shipping premium, Californian, organically-grown Medjool dates since 1983.  Packed and marketed in the ‘Red’ Bard Valley Medjool box, and under the Oasis Date Gardens label, consumers can be assured that they are getting the highest quality organic Medjool dates.  Bulk pack includes plastic sanitary shield, tongs and organic marketing display card.  (USA)

Horizon Natuurvoeding BV (stand FB14) specialises in the manufacture of organic nut butters, and is an importer and wholesaler of organic nuts, dried fruit and seeds.  Established in 1978, besides serving the Dutch market, they also export to numerous European countries.  New products for 2013 include organic goji berries and Monki Organic Pumpkin Seed Butter.  (The Netherlands)

Marketing association Agrarmarketing Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e. V (stand FC14) will be promoting organic food and drink products from the Mecklenburg-West Pomerania region in North-eastern Germany.  It will be exhibiting alongside Behr AG, Biosanica GmbH (dried Apple products), and Sanddorn Storchennest GmbH (Sea Buckthorn products).  (Germany)

On show for the first time, Pistachos Ecologicos Ibericos (stand FD24), are producers of high quality organic pistachios.  Its 30 hectare estate of organic pistachios is located in the North-eastern part of the province of Albacete, in Spain.  At 700 metres above sea level, with an extensive continental plateau climate, they produce pistachios under strict parameters of organic excellence.  All farming is organic; with official certification from the Spanish Organic Agricultural Committee CAAE (Comité de Agricultura Ecológica).  The company works exclusively with the Kerman and Kastel varieties of pistachios, due to their organoleptic and gastronomic qualities.

Happy People Planet (stand FA07) offers a unique range of organic snacks and chocolates – including organic and fair trade Belgian chocolates.  They source their organic almonds directly from farmer cooperatives in Spain and Sicily, their organic cashews from Burkina Faso, their organic pecans from South Africa, and their organic peanuts from China.  Spices and ingredients are locally sourced, including hot chilli, salt, pepper, sour cream, onion, and green tea seasonings.  New for 2013 – raw chocolate coated nuts and fruits.  (G.D. De Groene Weg B.V. (stand FC10) was established in 1981, inspired by a commitment to animal welfare and to the environment, but mainly as a result of a wish to make delicious meat products.  De Groene Weg has become a chain partner for both traditional butcheries, as well as for supermarkets, foodservice companies and the food-processing industry. Coordinating and optimising the organic beef and pork chain has now become an essential aspect.  (The Netherlands)

Natural Products Scandinavia

Basharat Intertrade AB (stand ND25) presents Greenday – the ‘snack of the century’.  A premium brand of vacuum-fried fruit and vegetable chips, Greenday is made from the finest raw ingredients via highly advanced technology, without any additives, preservatives or food colouring.  They are crunchy, low in fat and high in fibre, and the perfect snack for all ages.  (Sweden)

Swedish Cranberry Group AB (stand NB38) will be launching its wide range of fresh, pure organic juices (not made from concentrate), syrups, dressings and preserves – all made in an artisan way in its own factory.  They also produce a colourful and tasteful range of organic dried fruits and smoked garlic (always fresh garlic at home), which are very suitable to be delivered on private label.  (Sweden)

TOPAS Klaus Gaiser GmbH launch veggyness – the vegan brand for high quality meat alternatives.  Already successful at Hemsköp and Irma, there will be new products to try on stand NC19.  veggyness products are based on wheat protein and are not only completely meat-free, but genuinely vegan: no animal ingredients, lactose-free, egg-free, and naturally cholesterol free.  Ideal for those who care about what they eat.  (Germany)

"The Scandinavian market for organic products is so vivid, that we’ve been waiting eagerly for a show like this.  We exhibited in 2012, and it was a big success, we just can’t wait until October for another helping,” says Peter Kirwel, sales manager at Topas Klaus Gaiser GmbH.

Biofood has 25 years experience in the import and sale of organic and vegetarian food.  It will be showcasing a wealth of new products from its fantastic suppliers at this year’s show – including Sonnentor; Pukka; Rude Health; Lemberona; Mood Foods (OMBAR); and Vita Coco (stand NA46), which will be presenting its coconut water in new, more convenient packaging.  Highlights from Biofood AB (stand NA44F) include new Biofood on the go, healthy, organic snack mixes – available in Power Snack, Tropical Energy, Protein Hit, and On the Go.  (Sweden)

Already available across much of Scandinavia, Sonnentor’s organic specialties include herbs, teas and spices; plus coffee, honey, sweets, and many other products.  New attractive display stands with organic, high quality herbs and spices will be showcased on stand NB44.  (Austria)

Pukka Herbs (stand NB43) will be presenting their unique and 100% organic Bio Nutrient range: nutrient-rich supplements created by Sebastian Pole.  Hero product ‘Clean Greens’ is a powerful, cleansing blend of 12 chlorophyll-rich green foods, with high antioxidant capacities; the ultimate cleanser for everyday use.  Pukka’s natural Vitamin C is 100% free from synthetic ingredients, unlike many industrially-produced Vitamin C products.  None of Pukka’s products use fillers or binders.  They’ll also be hosting a session in the MAIA Organic Food & Kitchen Theatre on 20 October at 3.30pm – ‘Pukka Smoothies to Liven Up Your Senses’.  (UK)

Lemberona will be introducing its new, comprehensive range of organic and fairtrade food products on stand NB45.  Recent additions include a variety of cold pressed oils made from walnut, peanut, and apricot kernels.  (Austria)

OMBAR (stand NA44A) will be presenting its innovative raw chocolate bars, including new Coco Mylk and Strawberries & Cream flavours.  These powerful, eye-catching bars are 100% natural and organic, and made from ethically-sourced raw cacao and coconut sugar – satisfying a growing trend for indulgent but thoughtful food.  (UK)

Rude Health is fast becoming the UK's top selling independent food company.  It has just launched a unique range of milk alternatives, which it will be showcasing on stand NA44E.  The ground-breaking range includes Brown Rice (the first and only brown rice drink on the market), Oat, and Almond.  All deliver a truly outstanding taste experience, made using only the purest and highest quality ingredients.  (UK)

BUSLAK OIL, s.r.o. SLOVAKIA will present its organic virgin sunflower oil for frying, on stand NB41.  This sunflower oil unites all the advantages of cold-pressed sunflower oil, with the ability to heat up to 210 degrees C.  How is this possible?  The seeds are selected with great care and are only pressed once.  Due to its high content of oleic acid, this oil is ideal for use at high temperatures (whether frying, roasting or deep frying).  It is not refined and has no additives.  (Slovakia)

LOOV (stand NC25) will be launching its series of wild berry products, which are not only delicious but also high in nutritional value.  Sugar-free juices, berry powders, and many more products, will be complemented with a new raw food series that gathers all the familiar tastes from Nordic vegetable gardens and adds the magic of Estonian farmers.  Aso new for 2013, Forest Honey with Wild Blueberry.  Collected from around 1,400 blossoming forest plants, the honey is mixed with handpicked wild blueberry powder that has been tested for its high levels of antioxidants (3%).  The result is a live honey that softens at warm temperatures and crystallises in cold.  (Estonia)

Herzberger Bäckerei’s Spelt Rusties are made from a 100% traditional type of spelt (stand NA31).  These new delicacies have a hearty, nutty flavour, a crispy crust, and a fluffy-soft crumb that melts in the mouth.  Relish freshly baked rolls in just five minutes – enjoyable nutrition for all, including vegans.  Herzberger Bäckerei process the dough thoroughly implementing carefully chosen ingredients; such as mineral water from its own well and high quality olive oil.  (Germany)

Only Natural Products (stand NC26) will be featuring Dr Stuarts, Higher Living and Kromland Farm tea brands.  Each brand has exciting new products being launched at the show (33 teas in total); including Dr Stuarts World Taste Loose Teas, which are an innovative and delicious range of incredible teas in Dr Stuarts’ iconic designed packaging.  A new special retail display shipper will also be launched for both Higher Living and Kromland Farm, bringing these dynamic vibrant brands from the front of the UK 'Teavolution' to the Scandanavian market.  (UK)

“Higher Living Teas did not have any distributors from the Nordic region before exhibiting at Natural Products Scandinavia.  But due to the success of last year’s show not only did we find a distributor – we had a choice from many different countries!” says Keith Garden, managing director of Only Natural, explaining how Scandinavia quickly became a key part of the UK-based company’s “international growth strategy”.

The Original Drinks Co (stand NC30) is launching its Rochester Ginger non-alcoholic drinks range to Scandinavia; including new Organic Root Ginger with a citrus twist.  They will also be launching new Dickensian Green Ginger and Jamaican Dark Ginger flavours at the show.  All three of these drinks are great winter warmers so Scandinavia is a perfect match.  They are looking for distributors in Sweden, Norway and Finland.  (UK)

Essential Trading Co-operative (stand NC38) is a well established, worker cooperative based in the UK.  A wholesaler stocking over 5,000 lines, it specialises in organic, fair trade, vegetarian and free from products.  This year, they will be showcasing re-branded Essential Organic Tinned Fruit (sustainably sourced from Sri Lanka), and super healthy Essential Yeast Extract, which is low in salt and Gluten free.  Plus, there will be tastings of delicious Essential bio-dynamic herbal teas and fair trade chocolate spreads.  (UK)

Funksjonell Mat (stand NB33) is a Norwegian company that produces innovative food products for health conscious consumers.  All the products are based on natural ingredients.  Their best known product is Sukrin, a calorie-free sugar replacement now available in four different types.  Funksjonell Mat will be offering samples of a brand new savoury muffins mix (matmuffins) that is gluten free and low carb (only 4%), as well as their full range of healthy replacement products and baking mixes.  (Norway)

Acushla (stand NC37) presents an organic extra virgin olive oil, which is available in a 500ml can, 250ml stainless steel bottle, and 5litre bag in box.  The can stands outs because of the imprint of the logo.  The inox bottle due to its design, and its practical dimensions to use at the table.  Plus, it can be easily refilled using the bag in box.  Acushla is committed to quality and design.  (Portugal)

Cavalier N.V./S.A. is a Belgian family company that has been exclusively developing, producing and distributing chocolate products with no added sugar since 1996 (stand NB11).  New launches for 2013 include Ballotins 90g fruity pralines, which combines the intense taste of fresh fruit with milk and dark chocolate.  Citrus, strawberry, orange and summer fruit that renders an instant feeling of joy!  (Belgium)
