Information technology (IT) organizations can consume a lot of energy. Even though “IT” implies that not much paper is involved, since things are handled electronically, the amount of power used for running equipment can create a large carbon footprint.

Document Solutions, Inc. (DSi), a litigation support, e-discovery and digital forensics company, is actively seeking ways to address environmental challenges while continuing to handle growing volumes of data. One such way is by consolidating their physical infrastructure with the use of virtual servers, specifically VMware vSphere®, which has lowered their energy costs by approximately 82%.

“Over the last eighteen months, we have been gradually migrating many of our components to take advantage of what virtualization has to offer,” said Gary Torgersen, DSi vice president of operations & technology. “We are now using 60 virtual servers instead of 60 power-eating, heat-generating machines. This not only lowers our energy cost, it also drastically reduces our hardware and software expenses. These savings are passed on to our clients.”

Virtualization means that a single physical server can run multiple virtual operating systems performing the work of multiple servers. Servers purchased by DSi over the past year and a half were purchased with virtualization in mind. These servers were designed and built by Dell specifically for virtualization – utilizing less power, creating less heat and lowering demand for additional cooling.

“As we do with any technology we implement, we researched many options and vendors before we proceeded with VMware and Dell for our virtualization needs,” said Torgersen. “We then tested the waters with one server before gradually increasing our virtual capacity. VMware’s process and Dell’s equipment surpassed our expectations, affording us a higher level of productivity, improved agility and enhanced security, all while decreasing our overall energy costs and carbon footprint.”

VMware is the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions. The company’s Green IT Calculator estimates that DSi’s environmental impact as a result of implementing VMware vSphere is equivalent to planting 1,200 trees.

“Reducing costs and environmental impact are two of the leading reasons companies choose VMware vSphere® virtualization,” said Timothy Stephan, senior director product marketing for VMware. “What they find once they’ve started along the virtualization journey is that there are many additional benefits, including increased IT availability, better application performance, more cost-effective business continuity, and greater operational efficiency. With VMware virtualization, businesses like DSi are transforming IT to both reduce its impact to the environment and deliver higher levels of service and more innovative products to their customers.”

DSi is currently hosting 60 virtual servers on 12 physical servers. Those servers, as well as additional servers that are not virtualized due to the housed data and/or the programming, are all from Dell.

“We’ve been a long-time partner of VMware and our servers are engineered to make the most of its virtualization capabilities,” said Matt McGinnis, director of PowerEdge Marketing for Dell. “We share a common goal with DSi of providing environmentally sustainable products to our customers. We’re pleased to make that happen for DSi customers with an efficient, flexible, cost-effective, and service-oriented IT environment.”

“Server virtualization is one of many items in our green portfolio,” said Tom Turner, DSi co-founder. “However, our top priority is still that we provide outstanding customer service. The main goal of any initiative is that it effectively meets our customer’s needs.”

Document Solutions, Inc. (DSi) has been consistently making the effort to “go green,” with another recent change being an electric delivery car. For more than a year, DSi has used its eye-catching, energy-saving car to make as many as 12 local deliveries a day – without using gasoline or polluting the environment. DSi also saves all paper waste and has it shredded and used for recycling. Additional environment-friendly programs and technologies will be rolled out during the coming year.
