2015 Board of Directors reveals new five-year strategic plan
(Jan. 6, 2015) – The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) today announced Matthew F. Powers, MS, BSN, RN, MICP, CEN, has assumed the role of president. This one-year appointment comes as the professional organization of 40,000 emergency nurses celebrates its 45th anniversary.
As president, Powers works with the ENA Board of Directors to set policies to govern and guide the Association. He has general oversight of the Board of Directors, and serves as the official representative and spokesperson of ENA.

The ENA Board of Directors was instrumental in developing ENA’s new five-year strategic plan which focuses on member recruitment, engagement and retention, expanding global partnerships, educational product growth and continued leadership in measuring quality and safety in emergency nursing care.
“I’m looking forward to spending this year focusing on identifying the needs of our members to inform decisions that will strengthen our organization and benefit all members, which in turn will strengthen our duty to deliver compassionate care to our patients and their families,” said Powers. “ENA’s strategic plan centers on keeping nurses, other emergency department personnel, patients and their families safe while helping members provide exceptional, skilled emergency care. I’m excited to help lead that mission.”
Powers started his career as a paramedic while attending nursing school. He then went on to become an emergency department nurse, charge nurse, and clinical preceptor, which led to his work overseeing clinical competence and protocol development, and instituting clinical oversight to American Medical Response and county-wide fire paramedics.
He served as the 2003 president of the Emergency Nurses Association East Bay Chapter and was president of the California Emergency Nurses Association in 2007 and 2008.
Powers currently oversees operational and clinical services for the North County Fire Authority in San Mateo County, Calif., covering EMS services for four fire departments as an EMS Battalion Chief. In 2007, he was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and served as EMS commissioner to the California State Emergency Medical Services Commission filling the emergency nursing seat. Powers was elected chair of the commission from 2012 to 2013.
Powers also works as an on-call emergency nurse manager for Kaiser Permanente-Vacaville and is a community college faculty member. He holds a Master of Science degree in emergency services administration from California State University, Long Beach.
