Fazer Group commits to 100% certified soy
Fazer is committed to using only sustainable certified soy by 2020. All the soy served as an ingredient in foods in Fazer Food Services’ restaurants is already certified. Indirectly, soy ends up on the plates through animal feed used in the production of meat, fish, dairy products and eggs.
Fazer’s commitment to 100% certified soy by 2020 covers all Fazer’s businesses. All the soy used directly or indirectly in the value chain will meet the requirements set by the RTRS (The Roundtable on Responsible Soy) or ProTerra. Fazer will report on the progress annually.
“By using certifications, we want to ensure that the soy used in our value chain fulfils the requirements of sustainable production”, says Managing Director of Fazer Food Services Finland Jaana Korhola.
Globally around 70% of all soy is used in animal feed. Fazer uses soy as an ingredient in the food and indirectly through animal feed used in the production of meat, fish, dairy products and eggs. Unsustainable production of soy has been associated with environmental impacts, such as deforestation and biodiversity loss.
With the soy objective, Fazer joins the Finnish soy commitment, which Kesko, HK Scan Finland, Arla Finland and Unilever Finland in cooperation with the WWF Finland have initiated.
More greens and domestic meat at Fazer Food Services’ restaurants
The soy commitment continues Fazer’s efforts to create a sustainable offering. The current food trends show an increase in the use of vegetables and interest in the origin of food. Fazer wants to support the rising interest in vegetarian cuisine and raise vegetarian food as the leading theme in its restaurants.
“While people are eating more plant-based foods, more attention is also paid to the origin and the amount of meat consumed. All the chicken we serve in Fazer’s restaurants in Finland is domestic. At least 90% of our meat is of Finnish origin”, says Jaana Korhola.
