2018 is in full swing! Are you looking forward to an eventful year with great cultural, culinary, and historical highlights? It’s time to add a German region to your reader`s bucket lists – one that promises to fill their vacations with spectacular events: the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region. Stretching along the romantic Main and Rhine rivers, the region celebrates a huge variety of festivals and events all year round. Be it hundred-year-old traditional folk celebrations in Aschaffenburg, Wiesbaden, Mainz, or Spessart, or cultural and colorful events in Frankfurt, Rheingau, Darmstadt, Hanau, Bad Homburg, or Rüdesheim, there is something to suit any desire and taste. Take a look and be inspired!

Rheingau – Mainz – Wiesbaden

Known as Germany’s oldest street festival, the Theatrium in Wiesbaden in June 2018 offers visitors a classic handcrafts market with more than 140 exhibitors, including jewelers and potters, with unique wares. One month later, the famous Rhine in Flames illuminates the Rhine Valley with its “burning castles” and the largest fleet of ships in Europe, starting from Bingen and Rüdesheim. Enjoy a delicious meal with regional wine accompanied by ambient music while the ship drifts slowly down the river and fireworks light up the valley. What a romantic experience! At the end of July, the Mainz Summer Lights is a dazzling party on the banks of the Rhine with a spectacular combination of fireworks, laser shows, and live performances. Why not visit the Rheingau Wine Festival with its 120 wine stalls in the shadow of Wiesbaden's historic town hall, or the 84-year-old Mainz Wine Market to browse through the artisan market while sipping wine? Finally, the Glorious Rheingau Days welcomes gourmets wishing to savor premium wines and masterful delicacies at a classy Riesling Gala Dinner in the beautiful Eberbach Abbey.

Frankfurt– Darmstadt – Aschaffenburg

Festivals all year long – that's Frankfurt! In the spring, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of music at the Frankfurt Music Fair or experience the colorful entertainment of the traditional forest festival Wäldchestag. In summer, at the Opera Square Festival, you can indulge in great culinary delights to a diverse musical program. Another highlight is the Apple Wine Festival, which pays tribute to the hundred-year-old culture of this regional beverage. The internationally renowned Museum Embankment Festival in August and Frankfurt Book Fair in October attract many visitors from all over the world. If architecture is of interest, the Art Nouveau Festival in Darmstadt should be on your list. Held at the former artist colony Mathildenhöhe, the festival offers art fans exciting exhibitions and a special event: colorful lanterns and illuminated buildings recreate the fanciful ambience of the 19th century. The Aschaffenburg Folk Festival is an occasion suitable for the whole family in summer: apart from the fireworks and a large parade in the medieval old town, the Bavarian beer gardens and the varied entertainment program for all ages never fail to impress visitors of this traditional festival.

Reichelsheim (Odenwald)

Every year on the last weekend in October, the Fairytale and Saga Days in Reichelsheim (Odenwald) is an opportunity for fans of fantasy and mythology, especially children, to explore the world of fairy tales. Little visitors would surely be thrilled to take part in the amazing literary and theatrical programs, and to visit the medieval market to experience what they usually only hear and dream about.

Bingen

Taking place in Bingen, the gateway to Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Bingen Swingt is the equivalent of a cool summer breeze in blistering heat for music lovers. Every year, this international jazz festival attracts thousands of visitors to listen to the funky beats of numerous jazz artists on six open-air stages in the town and on the river banks. And how about enjoying the jazz on a river boat along the Rhine? It’s a unique experience!

Bad Nauheim

Elvis Presley called Bad Nauheim home during his military service back in the 1950s, and, needless to say, left many traces behind. In commemoration of the King of Rock n' Roll, the city organizes an annual European Elvis Festival with concerts, exhibitions, interviews with people who knew him then, and impressive classic car parades. A visit to his former residence will round off your trip nicely.
