Report from Gapwaves presentation on ETSI’s conference on environmental requiremtents for 5G

Gapwaves chief technology officer Thomas Emanuelsson held a presentation on energy efficiency and the advantages with Gapwaves technology at ETSI’s conference on environmental requirements for 5G in France 23 November. ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) produces globally applicable standards for information and communication technologies within fixed and wireless communication.

On Thursday 23 November a workshop was held by the standardization institute for telecommunication, ETSI, under the theme; ETSI-ITU Joint Workshop Towards Setting Environmental Requirements for 5G. Gapwaves was invited to present our patented gapwaveguide technology which has significant possibilities to lower the energy consumed by the antenna parts in the access system. The presentation was very well received and the interest for the technology and its advantages was significant. After the presentation a panel discussion was held with multiple questions raised by the present system suppliers and ETSI representatives.

The presentation showed how big of a difference that can be achieved by using a technology with low losses combined with a construction method allowing for a very high frequency level. The total reduction in energy consumption for the active antenna corresponds to a factor 10.

”For 5G to become reality it is absolutely essential to address the question regarding energy consumption. Using today’s technology and increase the effect is not possible as energy consumption, the environmental impact and thereby the cost would be too high. Gapwaveguide technology is a direct solution to that problem and we will now write a White Paper on the topic by request from the committee chairman” says Thomas Emanuelsson, CTO at Gapwaves.
