GuideStar's Position in the Nonprofit Sector Strengthened Through Strategic Hiring and Partnerships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, DC—November 9, 2011—GuideStar, the leading source of nonprofit information, today proudly announced three major changes to the organization’s personnel: Alix Guerrier has been named to GuideStar’s board of directors; James Lum has been hired as GuideStar’s new chief financial officer; and vice president of research Chuck McLean has been appointed to the Panel of Nonprofit Sector Representatives for the Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations.

“Our people are our greatest assets, and we know that the addition of Alix Guerrier to our board of directors will strengthen the oversight of our organization,” said Bob Ottenhoff, GuideStar’s president and CEO. “Similarly, James Lum’s skills are helping us set GuideStar’s strategic direction for the coming years. Chuck McLean’s appointment to the Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations underlines the integrity and commitment to nonprofit transparency that inspires all of our work here at GuideStar.”

Alix Guerrier was welcomed as the newest member of the GuideStar board of directors during a September meeting in New York. Guerrier is a co-founder of a new educational Web company, LearnZillion. Prior to founding LearnZillion, he was a consultant in McKinsey & Company’s Education Practice, where he advised school systems and foundations on strategic matters. His previous work experience includes teaching in and directing an after-school program in one of Boston’s public housing projects; working as a member of the housing group in the public finance department of an investment bank in New York; and teaching full-time for several years, including in an International school in Brazil.

Prior to joining GuideStar as CFO, James Lum spent 14 years in the New York City area leading financial planning and analysis for media companies in television, radio, publishing, and the Internet. He served on the board of nonprofit Pacifica radio stations in both New York and Virginia and was a juror for the International Emmys for the last 10 years. He started his professional career as an environmental engineer for firms and clients across the East Coast.

Chuck McLean, GuideStar’s vice president of research, was appointed to the prestigious Commission on Accountability and Policy for Religious Organizations in September, joining representatives from religious groups, the broader nonprofit sector, and the legal community on a trio of oversight panels. The Commission was formed following a staff report issued by U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) that focused on the financial practices of six high-profile media-based Christian ministries. After releasing the findings of his three-year inquiry, the senator asked ECFA (Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability) to spearhead an independent national effort to review and provide input on major accountability and policy issues affecting religious and other nonprofit organizations.

“I am thrilled about these new additions and accolades for the GuideStar management team,” said Debra Snider, GuideStar’s vice president of operations. “Alix and James’ additions and Chuck’s appointment demonstrate GuideStar’s commitment to excellence and our unwavering desire to add value to the nonprofit, business and donor communities we serve everyday.”
