Gunnebo Targets Rapid Expansion of Urban Metro Systems in India

Gunnebo is supplying hundreds of metro speed gates to India’s rapidly expanding public transport system.

Metro projects covering a total length of around 600km are at various stages of planning and appraisal in India, which is following China’s spectacular growth in this area – Shanghai alone has more metro rail lines already in place.

In the past decade, more than 13 cities in India have given the go-ahead for metro rail systems, and many more are seeking clearance from central government for metro rail projects, seen as a modern solution to traffic congestion and environmental problems.

"We envisage major opportunities for metro speed gates the next few years," says Robert Hermans, Senior Vice President Business Unit Entrance Control.

"We are ideally placed in terms of having a good local product and a strong network of relationships with the metro authorities, the main players in the segment, and the banks. This puts us in a strong position to grow our metro business."

The speed gates are assembled in Gunnebo’s Halol factory in Gujurat from kits supplied by Gunnebo in China. Local assembly means that the speed gates comply with the government’s 'Make in India' policy, which stipulates that 50% of manufacturing must take place locally.
