TO SKI, OR NOT TO SKI: THAT IS THE QUESTION

HolidayPirates Reveals the Results of an International Survey Regarding Winter Holidays

  • 66% of Brits have never been on a winter sports holiday

  • 40% said they avoided winter sports due to the high costs

  • Spain, U.K and the Caribbean make up the top 3 winter destinations for British travelers

London, February 2nd, 2017. The online portal HolidayPirates, the world’s largest online travel community with 7.7 million Facebook fans , releases the results of their international winter sports survey. The results of the study illustrate the differences in the behaviour of Brits and their neighbouring countries in regards to winter travel. The survey was completed by 20,000 users of the HolidayPirates portal, including 2073 results from the U.K . The findings generally depict Brits as an anomaly in regards to winter holidays, accumulating entirely inverted results when compared to their European counterparts.

The figures show a U.K that had little in common with its cousins from across the channel. The UK ranked last out of seven countries in response to the question “Have you ever been on a winter sports holiday” with 66% saying no. It also had the lowest percentage of citizens that had tried skiing at any point in their life with just 37%. Those who had been skiing generally went at a young age with their school (35%), family (44%) or friends (51%).

However, the findings of the survey showed that Brits are not afraid of taking a holiday during the winter months. 30% admitted to preferring a winter getaway when asked to choose between winter and summer holidays. This ranked fourth; behind France, Italy and Spain. The study found that the desired destination for Brits during winter was Spain, as it is all year round. The HolidayPirates portal provides options for all winter travel possibilities by constantly publishing unmissable offers to both sun and snow locations.

For those who had partaken in a winter sports holiday, the survey suggested that their relationship with nature was their motivation . When asked what they liked most about winter sports holidays 45% answered that they enjoyed the fresh air and the mountains (ranked 1st) and 34% went for the snow (ranked 2nd).
