Let the games begin! The Hunger Games, a best-selling young adult trilogy and soon to be a blockbuster movie is giving its fans a little taste of something that could be the beginnings of a blockbuster movie franchise. It's official, The Hunger Games movie trailer will preview at the MTV VMAs on Sunday, August 28.

The Hunger Games series' first book, The Hunger Games, first hit the shelves in late 2008. At present time all three of the series' books, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, are still on the USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list. “The Hunger Games” has also appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for 25 consecutive weeks to date, and rights have been licensed for 32 foreign-language editions. Impressive? You bet, but there is more. “The Hunger Games” won the 2008-2009 Cybils Award for Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction. It was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2008; a 2008 Horn Book Fanfare Book; a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2008; a School Library Journal Best Book of 2008; a 2008 Booklist Editors' Choice; a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice; and a Kirkus Best Book of 2008.

With so much acclaim it was only a matter of time before Suzanne Collins's award-winning novel was being adapted into a movie. Lionsgate®, a leading next generation movie studio, announced in early 2009 that it has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film version of this best selling futuristic young adult series and filming would begin in early 2010.

A Strong, Loyal Following

Tapping a fan base similar to that of Harry Potter series’ creator J.K. Rowling and Twilight series’ author Stephanie Meyer, Collins has adolescents and adults alike enamored with her star character, Katniss Everdeen. Fans even have their own fan-club name, the tributes, and have been inspired to create elaborate trailers of their own as well as numerous fan made art as seen on Facebook and art sharing web sites.

The Hunger Games Movie Casting

Long before casting began, fans of the series were very vocal about their choice of actors to play their favorite characters. When asked if he had any predictions, Hunger Games Capitol's creator Jason Abney responded, "This series was predicted by many to be a movie franchise similar to Twilight and with such strong reaction from the book's fans in regards to casting I think all indications are that it will indeed be a blockbuster hit."  As Director, Gary Ross, began assembling his all-star cast for the film the fan base was evenly split with a love it or hate it attitude and the web was buzzing with comments and discussion. No choice was more scrutinized than that of Jennifer Lawrence being cast as leading lady Katniss Everdeen. The vast majority of naysayers for the choice of Lawrence were due to physical characteristics such as her hair color and her also her age. There were very few critics of Lawrence’s acting ability as this young woman has quickly earned honors with her dramatic role in “Winter’s Bone” and has since starred in the prequel to “X-Men.”

Whether happy with the casting or not, all fans of “The Hunger Games” are eagerly awaiting the film’s March 2012 release. MTV can expect a spike in VMA viewership due to their exclusive first look scheduled immediately following the annual award show.
