The Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), published its January edition of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which is a ranking system of world universities based on the volume of web contents (number of web pages and files) and the number of site citations they receive.

The Belarusian State University (BSU) climbed 25 positions, compared to the 609th position in August 2015, and now occupies the 584th place in the rankings. This year, BSU is ranked the third best university in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), losing only to the Lomonosov Moscow State University (134th place) and to the Saint Petersburg State University (452nd place).

In addition, BSU occupies the best position among Belarusian universities. The second and the third best Belarusian universities are the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno (2091st place in the world ranking) and the Belarusian National Technical University (2504th place), respectively.

Last year, BSU was also featured in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings in the 601–800 group as well as in the QS University Rankings in Emerging Europe and Central Asia, occupying the 36th position.

The Webometrics ranking is updated biannually, in January and July. The ranking system measures how strongly a university is present in the web by its own web domain, sub–pages, rich files, and scholarly articles.
