LONDON Tuesday 29th October 2013: Media are invited to the launch of a network of 18 state-of-the-art Digital Autopsy facilities for the United Kingdom, the first of its kind in the world.

Developed and funded by Malaysian Advanced Medical Informatics Company, iGene, the network represents a £50 million investment in the UK.  As well as benefiting from fast and precise results thanks to iGene's ground-breaking software, non-invasive Digital Autopsies represent a significant humanitarian step-change in the way post mortems are carried out.

WHAT: The UK network of Digital Autopsy Facilities will be officially unveiled at the first day of the World Islamic Economic Forum in London, and will be witnessed by the Malaysian Prime Minister, the Honourable Dato' Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak.

WHERE: the World Islamic Economic Forum, ExCel London, Royal Victoria Dock, London E16 1XL

WHEN: Tuesday October 29th, 14.00 (exact time tbc)

WHO: As well the Malaysian Prime Minister, present at the launch will be Mr Matt Chandran, CEO of iGene, and Professor Peter Vanezis, Consultant Forensic Pathologist to the Home Office and Chief Medical Officer for iGene in the UK. Mr Chandran and Mr Vanezis will be available for interview.

BACKGROUND: Digital autopsy involves a three-dimensional scan of the body using a CT scanner, before iGene’s revolutionary visualization software enables the pathologist to conduct a full, non-invasive digital post mortem, with the results being available shortly after.

There are approximately 550,000 deaths recorded in the UK each year, of which more than 200,000 are subjected to post-mortem, and it is expected that in the future digital autopsies will account for 70 per cent of these. Construction of the first facility, at Sheffield's Medico-Legal Centre, will be completed in November 2013 Centre and will be operated by Sheffield City Council.
