ISG Lands £6.5 Million Framework Scheme at Bristol Airport

ISG is due to commence work on a £6.5 million passenger improvement project at Bristol Airport, representing the largest scheme awarded to date via the four year capital works framework announced at the start of the year.

Part of a significant upgrade to the passenger terminal at Bristol Airport, the new central walkway scheme is designed to provide improved access to the existing forward coaching lounge, enhance the overall passenger experience and ease departure lounge congestion during peak travel times. The two-storey steel frame walkway will include four new pre-boarding zones, serving up to six departure gates. The 41,700 sq ft structure will connect directly to the departure lounge and will be served by an escalator, six lifts, food and drink vending, and toilet facilities.

The design of the new facility takes into account the latest generation of twin-engine, wide-body jets, such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, with provision made for the addition of an airbridge for passengers boarding potential long-haul flights in future. ISG secured the project with an innovative programme utilising a secure land-side enclosure to help minimise disruption at the terminal and avoid the requirement for site staff to pass through customs to enter the site.

The central walkway forms part of a comprehensive development of the Airport and follows completion of a western walkway in 2010, which reduced the need to bus passengers to and from aircraft. Overall planning approval is in place for facilities to handle 10 million passengers per annum, comprising 30 separate components, which will be developed over time in line with passenger demand, including extensions to the terminal, a public transport interchange, multi-storey car park and an on-site hotel.

Robert Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at Bristol Airport, commented: “The construction of the central walkway is a demonstration of our ambition to be the airport of choice across the South West and South Wales. It will significantly enhance the airport experience for our passengers and sets the bar high for future development of the terminal.”

Alan McCarthy-Wyper, managing director of ISG’s construction business, added: “The Bristol Airport capital works framework will prove highly influential in fast-tracking the operator’s planned enhancements to almost double passenger capacity by 2023. We are delighted to have been selected to develop this important element of the airport’s ongoing infrastructure plans, which underlines our strong track record and detailed sector expertise. Working from our Bristol office, we look forward to supporting Bristol Airport and alongside our local supply chain partners to deliver this prestigious project.”
