ISG's Store Conversion Programme For Asda Is A Nine Day Wonder

ISG has completed the conversion of 67 Netto retail units into Asda Supermarket stores in a demanding programme that has seen the contractor simultaneously complete eight projects at any one time across a delivery period of just nine days.

The £16 million fast-track store conversion programme completed at the end of 2011 with the final Southampton outlet, and has involved half of the former Netto store network, which is spread across the South East, Midlands, North West, North East and Wales. Netto sold its UK stores to Asda in May for a reported £778 million and the grocery retailer is using the smaller format stores, which average around 750m², to help build its Asda Supermarket brand.

The conversion of each store involved the strip out of the building to the existing floor and ceiling and the installation of new refrigeration, shelving and checkouts. Each outlet received a new deli, with some stores also including a bakery. Externally, the distinctive yellow Netto signage was replaced with Asda’s familiar green logo, with additional signage, changes to trolley bays, white lining of car parks and exterior refurbishment and improvement also forming part of the intensive nine-day programmes.

ISG worked closely with Asda and its delivery partners to maximise efficiencies and value engineer the project, which helped to reduce the cost of the store conversions by some £28 million. The supermarket giant recognised the contractor’s value engineering expertise in this national store roll-out programme by awarding ISG an Asda ‘Brick’ accolade as part of the retailer’s ‘Mindstep’ initiative, which promotes innovation and value driven solutions across the group and its supply chain.

Rob Martin, ISG’s operations director of UK Retail, commented: “The challenge for this project has not only been in completing each store in just nine days but completing eight stores simultaneously within such a demanding time frame. The business-critical nature of having the entire store network completed on time has meant that there is absolutely no margin for error. This scheme has once again proved ISG’s project management expertise in keeping a challenging programme on track and has enabled us to work closely with our client to add value and significantly reduce overall costs.”
