Lima modernises public transport with IVU systems

IVU.suite for 150 buses and e-ticketing in Peruvian capital

Berlin/Lima, 11 February 2015 – The Peruvian capital city Lima has been investing heavily for some years in the modernisation of its public transport system. This includes calls for new tenders for numerous important connections such as the Lima–Callao service. Since the start of this year the Grupo Express Perú (GEP Lima) has been operating a regular service with 150 buses between the capital city and the country’s chief seaport. IVU Traffic Technologies is supplying its IVU.suite for the scheduling and control of vehicles and personnel. The e-ticketing system is also provided by the Berlin-based IT specialists for public transport.

Many bus services in Lima operated in the past without any timetable or definite departure times. For the new Lima–Callao concession, GEP Lima now wants to attract passengers by offering a reliable service with punctual departures and high quality standards. In order to achieve this, the company is placing its trust in the IVU.suite from IVU Traffic Technologies AG. The project was launched on 28 November 2014.

IVU already has considerable experience on the South American market. Among others, the Colombian cities of Cali and Ibagué are already benefitting from IVU technology. “We are proud that with Lima we are able to support another major city with the modernisation of their public transport system”, says Dr Claudia Feix, branch head of IVU Traffic Technologies AG for Latin America. “Many cities in South America are facing similar problems and are beginning to establish a modern public transport infrastructure. With the expertise we have gained from previous projects on the continent, we are in a position to provide them with valuable impulses.”

The IVU.suite is a comprehensive IT solution for public transport that will be used by GEP Lima for the planning and operational control of an initial fleet of 150 buses. In particular the integrated planning for timetables, vehicle schedules and duty rosters ensures the optimum deployment of resources and efficient operations. Using the fleet management system IVU.fleet, the newly established operational control centre will be able to monitor the progress of the vehicles through Lima’s dense traffic and to intervene where necessary.

With IVU.realtime, GEP Lima can inform its passengers via smartphone apps or the Website about live departure times at each bus stop. The system receives the necessary real-time data from the IVU.ticket.box. These on-board computers, which are fitted in every vehicle, support both the printing of regular tickets and the e-ticketing standard which applies in Lima. The computers are protected against manipulations, and electronic tickets that have been paid in advance also help to avoid misappropriations of cash and ensure a stable flow of revenue for GEP Lima.
