John Woods Nurseries, the Suffolk-based supplier of plants to garden centres and retail nurseries across the UK, has had its front garden concept for display at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show accepted by the organiser.

‘A Fruitful Garden’ is an evolution of the company’s Upwardly Mobile display, created for RHS Chelsea Flower Show last year before being transferred to Capel Manor College, the UK’s National Gardening Centre in Enfield, north London. While the design creates an entirely new look, A Fruitful Garden retains most of the hard landscaping of Upwardly Mobile and combines many of its plants with new additions, along with a new perimeter fence.

The garden, designed by, DeakinLock, will form part of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Four Generations feature, sponsored by The Sun. It will demonstrate how a new homeowner can develop an existing front garden to grow fruit alongside existing planting with minimal fuss or outlay. Ease of maintenance and optimum use of limited space were key factors in the design. Other displays in the four Generations Feature include a schools Grow Your Own fruits and vegetables exhibit, a schools GYO Cut Flowers garden and Class Gardens 'Mature Couples' front garden.

Created for a theoretical end-of-terrace property on a new build development in an East Anglian town, A Fruitful Garden features reclaimed galvanised water tanks that act as features while collecting rain water for irrigation. The plot is bordered on two sides by a fence of reclaimed metal re-bar and timber posts which are semi industrial, reflecting the urban location. They also allow greater access to planting around the edges of the plot, making maintenance easier. A stone plinth provides seating in the garden while a high western boundary wall clad with pebbles and timber, reflecting the materials used throughout the property, and demonstrating how, even in a small space every surface can be used creatively.

Apple trees provide height and structure whilst cubes of box and Coprosma in the scheme give a strong architectural framework around which the rest of the plants provide contrasting texture and form. Predominant colours in A Fruitful Garden are purples, blues, pinks, whites and silvers with hot spots of colour to provide a simple and unfussy palate.

Commenting on the exhibit’s customer benefits John Lord, managing director at John Woods Nurseries, said “A Fruitful Garden will inspire home owners who want to put their mark on their front garden and take advantage of the opportunity to grow their own fruit. While it’s very different in appearance to our Upwardly Mobile theme from last year, this design has maximised every opportunity to reuse key components.”
