Keewords, one of the market’s leading online providers of foreign language learning, is expanding its language base. We are, for example, launching the requested languages of Arabic, which you can now learn from eight different languages. More examples include Chinese, Russian and English — all of which are found in nine language combinations. In total, Keewords has the 9,000 most common words in each of nine languages.

Keewords is a Swedish language-learning company whose service is built upon a flip card visual learning system. This system is aimed at teaching the most important and most commonly used words in order to achieve the fastest possible acquisition of another language. The service, which is online and available as a smartphone app, now has 100,000 users from 200 countries and the requests for new languages and language combinations are on the increase.

“We are working all the time to develop our service offering and to customise it in response to demand. The need for learning languages is huge and we are getting enquiries from all over the world. Arabic and Russian are two very widely used languages in which we now have more comprehensive course offerings”. Sten Ernerot, CEO of Keewords.

More examples of languages which have been added to Keewords and are now available to start learning — from nine different languages — include Swedish, Russian, Polish, Norwegian, Italian, Greek, English, Chinese and Arabic.

Based upon the most frequently used words

Keewords is based upon the most frequently used words of a language, and divides the words into six different levels in accordance with the European Council's scale of language assessment. As a user, you can complete a simple test on Facebook to see which level you are at. Then you get to choose which subjects and language packages that interest you specifically — at the right course level for you.

Originated as a research project

Keewords was the initiator of the ‘KELLY’ international language learning research project. The KELLY project is the foundation for the Keewords service and is a collaboration with 10 universities and the European Commission. This is the first time that an international language learning research project has been executed on this scale, and is a first step towards standardising language competency  and what one can achieve according to CEFR. Keewords has sole commercial rights to offer products and services around these words.
