LFV and Combitech are developing technology for increased safety at airports

LFV and Combitech are developing innovative technology that will enable airports to improve ground safety by radically reducing the risk of unauthorized ground vehicles on the runway. These are termed Runway Incursions (RWI).

"In collaboration with the aviation industry, LFV develops smart solutions for future flights. This new technology for reducing the number of runway incursions is a good example of how LFV works with flight safety, innovation, efficient working procedures and customer focus," says Gunnar Olsson, Research and Innovation at LFV.
All vehicles at an airport automatically report their positions and identity up to ten times per second. This information enables air traffic controllers to coordinate ground movements of aircraft and vehicles via their display unit with high precision, thus avoiding the risk of incidents.
In collaboration with LFV among others, the RISE Viktoria research institute has developed DRIWS (Digital Runway Incursion Warning System), a pilot system that has been demonstrated to a large number of stakeholders.
"The system has been built to meet the requirements of the Swedish Transport Agency and takes safety one step further, particularly in poor visibility conditions and at night," says Jonas Didoff, project manager at RISE Viktoria.

The system is based on an idea from the RISE Viktoria, who through their work in the automotive automation has extensive experience in connected vehicles. Combitech and LFV are now taking it to the next stage, a commercial product, which will be tested at Umeå and Örnsköldsvik airports in spring 2017.
"DRIWS is an excellent example of digitalization and application of IoT (Internet of Things), with a cost-effective mix of newly developed hardware and software in combination with commercially available technology for communication and satellite navigation, where quality assurance, and integration with other air traffic control systems have been taken into account,” says Magnus Johansson, business area manager at Combitech.
"This is an example of really good collaboration between research and industry," says Gunnar Olsson. The project has been developed from concept to final product in just over a year.
After approval by the Transport Agency, the system will be made available at all airports in Sweden. Solutions for safer traffic at airports must be implemented by the beginning of 2018 at the latest according to EU requirements.
