SWEDISH CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY OF THE
DISCOVERY OF NICKEL
On Wednesday 7th November in Stockholm, Sweden plays host to an
international gathering that will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the
discovery of Nickel.
Since Swedish chemist, Axel Cronstedt, identified and isolated this
important metal in 1751, Swedish industry has become a world-leader in
the development and manufacture of a wide range of special materials of
which nickel is the essential ingredient. From corrosion-resisting
stainless steels used throughout the chemical, petrochemical and pulp
and paper industries to the exotic superalloys used to power modern gas
turbine engines, Swedish manufacturers are at the leading edge of this
technology.
The occasion will be marked by a special seminar to be held at the
Swedish Engineering Institute in Stockholm. Distinguished presenters
will describe the many ways in which nickel materials have contributed
to a safer, technologically progressive society throughout the last two
centuries and look forward to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
The seminar will pay particular attention to future environmental
challenges and will highlight several ways in which nickel-containing
materials will address those challenges and point the way to a more
sustainable future.
To mark the occasion, the Dutch-based International Nickel Study Group,
an inter-governmental body, which provides a forum for international
consultations on nickel-related issues and produces and updates nickel
supply and demand statistics world-wide, will stage its Autumn meeting
in Stockholm to coincide with the seminar.
The seminar brings together for the first time a group of sponsors and
contributors each having an important stake in the past, present and
future evolution of nickel-containing materials.
The presentations will be included in a press-pack (CD-ROM) to be
distributed at the seminar. They will also be available by visiting the
