Metsä Group press release 30 May 2012

Metsä Group employs in its different operating countries over 1,000 summer employees for summer 2012. The summer employees work in a variety of positions at the Group’s business areas’ production and offices. Approximately 700 of the jobs are in Finland. In addition to summer jobs, the Group employs nearly 200 short-term trainees. The number of summer employees is on par with the previous year, and the Group received approximately 4,000 applications for them.

”The wood, pulp, board and paper industry and the forestry sector are significant for the Finnish economy. The forest cluster employs approximately 200,000 people in Finland, generating around one-third of our net export revenue. The industry is undergoing continuous renewal and needs new experts in production, product development and administrative tasks alike. The summer jobs and trainee periods are important not only for the young, but the industry as well,” says Anneli Karhula, Metsä Group SVP, HR.

Metsä Group offers the summer employees diverse tasks at mills and office environments. The summer employees include students from a diverse range of fields, even though most of them are specialising in the technical sectors.

“A summer job period is an opportunity to demonstrate one’s competence to a potential future employer. It is also an opportunity to gain experience in one’s own field and the company – to be assured whether one is studying the right field and is willing to work in it in the future as well,” says Juha Rötsä, personnel development manager at Metsä Group.

”The summer employees will in fact contribute to keeping the mills running during the holiday season by working with more experienced employees to substitute for regular employees. As is the case for all of our employees, we will offer our summer employees good resources for on-the-job-learning and development, while we require them to demonstrate responsibility and initiative,” Rötsä says.
