28/05/2010, London - an agreement between LOCOG - the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games 2012 - and Mondo S.p.A. was signed today, making the Italian firm the “Official Supplier for Sport Flooring and Equipment” for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This agreement marks the tenth consecutive collaboration between the world leader in the production of sports, commercial and industrial flooring and an Olympic Organising Committee. It is a common thread which began at Montreal in 1976, through which an almost inseparable partnership between the Olympics and Mondo has arisen. It is a partnership based on a sporting culture and technology which together guarantee the performance and safety of athletes.

“It has been 34 years since we signed the first contract, for Montreal 1976,” says Maurizio Stroppiana, Managing Director of Mondo S.p.A. “I am both proud and honoured to be able to sign our tenth contract to become suppliers to the Olympic Games. Mondo continues to be the permanent and indispensable benchmark for the success of all international sporting events”.

LOCOG Chairman Sebastian Coe said, “I set my first world record and won Olympic medals on Mondo tracks so I know they will provide world class products and services for London 2012.  We look forward to working with them between now and 2012 to provide all athletes coming to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games top class facilities and equipment.  This is another example of the innovative approach we are taking to our commercial programme, bringing world class suppliers to the table.”

As “Official Supplier for Sport Flooring and Equipment”, Mondo will not only supply materials, but all logistic and technical support services in the preparation stages, as well as during and after the event.

It is testament to both their experience and expertise that, in response to the specific request of LOCOG, Mondo will be able to cover the needs of as many as 10 different sports disciplines, such as two of the most representative Olympic sports, athletics, basketball, as well as some important Paralympic sport disciplines, wheelchair basketball, rugby, boccia and goalball.

LOCOG's decision, in line with the theme of eco-sustainability which features strongly in the London Games, rewards the efforts made by Mondo in terms of Research and Development: the products provided are environmentally friendly throughout all stages of their life, from production, which uses recycled raw materials, through to their disposal.

To further meet the goal of “zero-waste Olympics” proposed for London 2012, Mondo has also agreed to provide some of the materials on a rental basis, and has pledged to reassign them after the event for further use.

Some materials will however remain the property of LOCOG, including surfaces and equipment for athletics, and basketball court flooring and equipment.

Athletes will compete on the MONDOTRACK FTX, the surface borne out of research by Mondo, on which numerous medals have been won, and which was used during the 2008 Summer Olympics. As on that occasion, the track will be tailored to meet the specific requirements of both the London Olympic stadium and the English climate.

Basketball players, on the other hand, will face one another on the innovative, removable flooring system, FAST BREAK SYSTEM 2, created by Mondo to both optimise athletic performance and reduce the time required for assembly and disassembly. Even the baskets used on court have been specially redesigned by Mondo for this important event.
