Mott MacDonald has been retained by BAA to provide project management and technology support for the ICT systems at the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport. The consultancy’s primary sub-contractor, Firstco, will continue to provide the technical assurance services.

The project encompasses design and delivery of 73 systems and subsystems covering communications, security, airport operations and building services. The systems include IT network infrastructure, radio and cellular systems, access controls, internet protocol television (IPTV), lighting controls, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), CCTV, wireless, and flight information and public address systems. Across the 400,000m2terminal some 1,400 CCTV cameras will be installed using the latest video over IP technology. Video over IP provides greater flexibility as the devices can be placed anywhere within the building and moved as required. Terminal 2 will also provide next generation Wi-Fi access and a public and private 4G network.

Mott MacDonald has been working as part of BAA’s integrated team since May 2010 responsible for delivering all the systems into Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 2 site, which includes the main Terminal 2 building, satellite pier T2B, a multi-storey car park and a cooling station.

Peter Kent, Head of ICS at BAA, said: “Our vision is for Heathrow to be Europe’s hub airport of choice. With Mott MacDonald we have reached full production design for all technology packages and this is significant milestone. With more than 60 stakeholders – including 19 airlines, BAA and supporting agencies, each requiring different communications systems for everything from check-in to baggage handling – Mott MacDonald have been working with us to manage the implementation and to coordinate all contractors involved in the build.”

Tom Allen, Director at Mott MacDonald, adds: “Heathrow’s new Terminal 2 is expected to receive 20 million passengers every year. With so many carriers in a single terminal, ICT systems need to be seamless and provide the scale and flexibility required by passengers, as well as serve the security and communications needs of the airport. Together with BAA and their contractors, we have completed the design phase and are now moving into the installation phase during 2012. This will be followed by a period of testing before all goes live in 2014.”

John Myers, Head of Consulting at Firstco, adds: “Although Firstco has been involved in previous stages of the Terminal 2 development it has never been taken for granted that we would be successful in our application for this and future phases. However Firstco’s team of experts working on this development are continuing to deliver the highest quality service and technical assurance in a very challenging environment.”

Mott MacDonald is also working as detailed design engineer on behalf of Balfour Beatty for BAA on the construction of satellite pier T2B. The project is the largest ever airside project BAA has ever undertaken.
